My dear sister was down from cold Kentucky and decided we needed to clean up my Mothers yard (grass, tree limbs, old rotten lumber, etc). They were just enjoying the beautiful warm weather here in Texas and got energetic. We filled up the old F-150 and headed to the dump groung. There was another dumper there so we sort of had to wait to back in but while standing there watching, I noticed a roll of copper tubing. Then another roll and then a third roll. I ask if they were dumping those. The young man said YEP! So I asked if I could have them. To my surprise, it was solid copper not tubing and weighed about 15 lbs a roll. My sister thought I was crazy. Hey, that was about 45 lbs of pure solid copper. I thought that was a good day at the dump ground. It is illegal here to take things out that have been dumped but it had not been dumped yet.

It is definately solid copper, 1/4" diameter, does not stick to a magnet and I cut the end off to make sure it was copper. Probably what is used for ground wire ??. Thought it was tubing because it was buried under trash and could only see it through the trash. Can't believe someone would just toss it. |

If it is ground wire, put it on craigslist, you'll get better than scrap! |

Since I don't do much scrapping, I never thought about Craigs List. I suppose it would be good to learn what, where and how to identify what I find. Thanks for the suggestion. |

I have bought the solid copper wire at Home depot for ground wire, you could see what they're getting now and just go a little cheaper |

Uh! I would avoid a advertisement on craigslist for copper. Unless you want many people knowing your business local and where you are located. |

I got $2.15 a pound for copper in Dec. Make sure you get more for it than scrap value when you put it on Craigslist... |

That is why you meet at a public place. Fast food place, Wal-Mart parking lot, etc. |

That makes sense!
All the same I have seen people stabbed over far less around junk yards pertaining to copper. It is valuable and some folks with limited intelligence and no moral code (copper is a poor mans gold) may assume you have more and simply follow you home to discover a truck loaded with goodies or a yard full worth checking out in the wee hours.
Small percentage I am sure and I may just be overly paranoid when it comes to my dealings with metal! I am sure most people would be fair and honest and meeting in a public location would stifle any potential danger.
I use craigslist often for many things. I guess I am just saying be careful! |

I have never had any dealings with Craigs List. I am overly cautious I guess. I just assumed that it was #1 copper and figured I would put it with all the other copper in my buckets. Will check to see how much it is at HD or Lowe's. Just surprised to actually get it!

Do you know if they have had problems with people taking things from the dump? It seems funny that its illegal to steal things. The state and/or corporation that owns the land must want to keep their trash or not get sued. |

That's great! I always look in the back of the trucks that are in front of me when I need to make a dump run, just because you never know, and like your dump,it is not allowed for anyone to take anything once it has been dumped. I always see a huge pile of computers, and TV's. Makes me cringe. |
