Is anyone else on this board a junkyard junkie? Do you find yourself wanting to junk up your garage/yard with precious metal that will make you $$, but take a lot of slack from your wife/gf for junking up the place?

My husband doesn't seem to mind.

My garage has been packed lately since I had to turn-in my storage unit last month. My wife doesn't mind - she knows I'll throw a couple of bucks her way when I come home from the scrapyard.

I've offloaded some odd and end parts lately, but I'm still pretty cluttered in one corner. I'm only 23 so I'm still living the unmarried life. As far as the GF goes, she cant say anything because this is my place and I bought it and I pay my own bills. Other than a few of her clothes and some stuff in the bathroom, she owns nothing here and has no say in what goes on here. This is my castle and I intend to keep it that way for as long as possible.

Hell no! My wife not only helps me bring the stuff home. She helps me sort and clean it too! Gotta love those country girls!

I made my rounds to the local garages this week and picked up another 170 lbs of lead, what don't go out the barrel of the 12ga BP will eventually wind up in some scrap yard, we have over a ton now, half old wheel weights and half pure lead. I know it ain't healthy, but when you've been melting it for over 60 yrs, you stop worring about the health issues.

I've gotten two code violations from the county! Now I keep every thing in the shed or a small area I fenced with Privacy fence.

Are you throwing that out?

I'm surprised they give the lead away. When I asked for my old catalytic converter back at the local shop the desk clerk frowned and then said sure. If anyone were to hang onto metal I would expect it to be those guys...

As an aside, do you have to do anything special to scrap old tire weights? I save them when I find them but I noticed some seem to have a steel clip. Do I have to cut that off before scraping?

It floats to the top when you melt the lead. Lead being heavier pools beneath it. Just remove with a magnet and skim.

Aren't you afraid of lead poisoning? I hope there are no children anywhere near where you are melting.

Heck, I'd put them to work skimming those steel clips out of the melted lead!

I guess you only looked at the pictures because I said that I had been melting lead over 60 yrs. I was raised back in the real world, if you wanted to eat, you worked, and if melting lead ment you could make an honest buck and eat that night, you done it.
No, there are no kids around, but even a kid wouldn't smell anything that was a little rank, like a bottle of bleach or ammonia.
wheel weights aren't to bad unless they've been oil soaked or there are a few rubber valve stems in the mix, it's the lead out of batteries that have the bad smell. Am i telling anyone to melt lead?, NO. Am i going to keep melting lead? Yes, hopefully another 60 yrs. PS, I'm over 70, med free, walk 3-5 miles every day, cut wood, haul logs out of the woods with horses so I'm thinking that melting the lead didn't hurt me.

I have taken in a mixture of wheel weights (with clips) and other lead (fishing weights found with MD, etc), and they have always taken them as is.

right, the junk yards will take the lead as is at a discounted price. we don't sell any as we use the pure lead to make RBs and conicals for the 50 cals. we use the lead from weights for sinkers and 690 RBs for the 12 ga. smooth barrel.
There will come a day when lead will be very hard to get. I've seen the days when we've went thru 50 lbs of sinkers, especially when we go out into the ocean and use the 10-15 ounce ones. If it will melt so i can pour it in a mold, i'll take it.
