No wonder it's so hard to find anything to post on Uthminsta's pre-1940 tracking thread! According to cwgii, he found thirty wheaties per 10,000 cents searched last year. At the rate he searches, that's a big enough base to form a reliable basis for calculations. He's also in my same District 12 (although I doubt that nationwide there's much variance in wheaties percentages... about one percent of all coppers encountered). So I just counted my pre-40's from my handsorting days of October/November 2009 and, get this... I had only 34 pre-40's out of 505 wheaties! Correlating with cwgii's stats... that means your odds of finding a pre-1940 wheatie are only one per every $50 searched. How do your own stats compare?

Edit: That's about where I am. I hand job $100.00 in cents a week and yes, it is about 1-3 pre 1940's per week.

beauanderos that stale cereal thing is a sick joke. worthy of ME! I think I'm beating the 1/4951, by maybe 1 extra. I was doing better a year ago, and I do better than that with bank bags. |

I was in that ballpark of 1 per $50, but lately that has changed to 1 per $10. Common pre-1940, however. |
Grandpa always told me, "Back in 1964..." I listened.

I currently am working on a box that is coming up a bit better. I'm getting 35% copper and I've found 12 wheats, including a 1912 (very rough though). |
Are you throwing that out? |

I haven't found a pre-40 in the last 4 boxes, even though i've been getting 25-30 post 40's per box. Last year I was getting at least 1 pre-40 per box, sometimes 2-5 per box. Yes, the pre-40's are getting scarcer now. |

The past two months have seem a dramatic improvement for me... copper up to an average of 39% per box, wheats running about 16 per box and of those 4 are pre 40's, so about one in $7 +/-. My Canadians in boxes are trending older too, I must be getting a lot of recycled change drawers and penny jars to make bill payments showing up in boxes now. |

That's the one good thing about the recession. These cents haven't totally disappeared, they're just in hiding. Every once in awhile, they'll see the light of day and surface when someone steals a coin collection and spends it, breaks open a piggy bank, or inherits a huge stash of wheaties and dumps them back into the circulation pool. I really think that's what accounts for the older wheaties we see now. I seriously doubt that they've been in circulation for a hundred years, they are just continuously trickling back into circulation after having sat out maybe several decades at a time |
