I just have to tell you guys that sometimes you can get lucky on Craigslist!

I just got 240 POUNDS of pennies for $380, and the guy brought them to me here at work.

There's some coffee cans and some paint cans filled with pennies and whatnot.

It wouldn't hurt to check Craigslist out - every once in a while, you might find something good!

Maybe I ought to buy a Ryedale...

Sure hope so. Otherwise he got ripped.

Thats about the average going rate for mixed zinc and copper pennies, around $1.60 a lb. You'll get the copper for face, and cash in a little extra on the zinc. I would guess only about $25 in cash profit on the zincs not including the copper value above face or any wheaties.

You did fine.

If they are all copper 145 pennies to the pound would be $348.00
If they are all zinc 181 pennies to the pound would be $434.40

Great deal! Even if you got mixed coins I don't think you paid face value for them. If their all copper that is a smoking good deal.

Nice score, Mooski. Let us know eventually, if you found anything good in there. What's the going rate on whatnot's?

Hoard now and hold on!

Here's an update - with a bonus story!

I have sorted about a pound of them, and I'm getting about 40-45% copper. Haven't found any nickles, dimes, or quarters or other whatnot.

The pennies aren't exactly clean - they're a little grimey. (It's okay...)

Now, for the bonus story!

I was surfing Craigslist, and I saw a guy was selling 100 POUNDS of Wheaties for $350.

I give him a call, telling him that it would be Saturday before I could get them, but I am VERY interested in the pennies.

"Well, I've had a few phone calls, and I have bills to pay, so the first one here with money gets the pennies".

So after hemming and hawing a bit, I decide to go get the pennies.

He's in Salem, OR.

I live in Seattle.

Mapquest is correct when they tell you that it is a FOUR HOUR DRIVE ONE WAY from Seattle to Salem.

(For those of you bad at math, that means I had to drive 8+ hours total to get back to Seattle.)

Not only did I:

A) Get the pennies
B) He had an additional 30 pounds that I also bought
C) Got back to Seattle at 2 in the morning, and made it to work somewhat on time today
D) The average penny is a 1935 or so - plenty of 10's, 20's and 30's, very few 40's, and very little 50's
E) My total cost for these pennies, including gas, is about 3.2 cents per

And I have a heck of a story!

Great score on both purchases Mooski! I hope you find a couple of the rarer early 1920 pennies!
Good luck & let us know how you make out when you get through them all.

Happy hunting!

Good find. How do you plan on offloading the wheats and other finds or are you collecting?

Hoo doggie!

It looks like the average year of these coins are 1935ish. AVERAGE! I just took 20 coins out of one bucket, and this is what I got: 13, 23, 26, 28, 28-D, 29, 35-D, 38, 42, 44, 46, 46-D, 48, 48-S, 49, 51, 52, 52-S, 56, 56.

I really don't know how much I should sell these for!

When I got them, I was thinking that I could just repackage them in 5 pound bags and sell them for $50 each. But with an average age of 1935ish?

Help (or offers! ;) would be greatly appreciated!
