During my half dollar searching this week I came across a strange looking Kennedy half dollar. The edge is strange. It has a smooth groove around the coin, in the center. This is hard to explain. It looks like it was stamped this way. So, it has reeded edges with a smooth part in the middle. Like an Oreo cookie, the brown cookie sides have reeding and the white stuff in the middle is smooth. Has anyone seen this before? What is it? I took it to a coin show yesterday and several dealers looked at it and said "that's weird".

Maybe someone put it in a lathe in a high school shop class out of boredom?

I've seen something similar once. It was a "magicians" coin. The groove is made to accomodate a small thin rubber band, and the coin itself is kinda cut down the middle, along Kennedy's profile, and is somehow hinged. This is how a "magician" could make it appear he was magically moving a half dollar from outside a bottle, into the bottle, as the coin would fold up and then spring back ounce it was in the bottle. Maybe yours was originally created for that purpose but was never completed, or like simplicitycounts says, it could have been some bored kid in shop class. I remember doing some weird things to coins myself in shop class LOL

No, this is for sure not a magicians coin. I have found several of those. This appears to have happened during the minting process.

Maybe someone was trying to make a coin ring from this 1/2 dollar. Maybe it doesn't have enough silver in it to so successfully. It was started but never finished?

Happy hunting all!

Nice. Yes. Very nice.
