I have recently paid off an old loan and now I am going to have some extra "play" money. Apart from buying gold and silver, and a few more pennies, I was thinking of jumping into halves or some other 90% possible bulk coin. What are the prices of quarter, dime, and halves boxes? I am assuming it is harder to get the banks to let these go without ordering. If you order I am thinking you would probably get a lot of '07's if not all new. Can a Ryedale machine sort dimes? Halves and quarters would be easy to sort buy hand due to date size. Sorry I rambled on and on. Thanks.

I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks.

It's good to have "play" money. You won't really be spending much of it, cause you won't have to worry about a high percentage of silver and you just have to replace what you took out and go cash in the box. Halves come in $500 boxes, Quarters in $500 boxes, and dimes come in both $500 and $250 boxes. The Ryedale won't sort dimes very well, they get hung up in the hopper and jam. There is an easy way to sort dimes. A silver dime is about 2 tenths of a gram heavier than a clad dime. By putting the entire roll on a good digital scale it will tell you if there is possibly a silver dime in there because these rolls will be slightly heavier. Then you only have to open the promising rolls and check the edges.. no need to look at each date. The scale method will also tell you if you got short or long rolls. Fortunately because of the thinness of the dime, there tend to be more long rolls than short rolls.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

I never thought of weighing the dime rolls like that. Thanks for the tip. I can't decide what to get....

Man you could burn through alot of dimes sorting that way. I'd guess about $1500 worth an hour. The only problem would be returning them.
I would have to open all the rolls after I sorted them just so I could run them through my bank's coin counter. Then they would send them off to Brinks where they would get rerolled. How goofy would that be?
Or maybe I could buy stickers with my name and address on them and stick them to every roll so the bank would take them rolled... |

You forgot the other option.. just roll them all back up with your automatic rolling machine.. very convenient. I don't think the bank would like all those dimes being turned in, even if you do sticker them, but using stickers with your name and account # is not a bad idea if your bank requires you to put that on all the rolls you turn in.
You are right, it goes pretty fast this way. You still have to take into account the different types of rolls the dimes come in and the slight variance in weight of the wrappers. I still open plenty that have no silver in them just to be sure, but it saves time being able to process several of the rolls with the scale. You want to process those coins as quickly as possible or you could tie up significant amounts of capital. This puts a dent in your available "play money."
Unfortunately there are no banks near me that have counting machines, so I have to use my own counting machines and have them load the coins dirctly into a bag. Fortunately my dump bank lets me drop off the bags. The counting machines are even faster than the rolling machines.. even more convenient. The 2 rolling machines only roll 10 rolls per minute each, but 2 of the counting machines count 1800 coins per minute each and the other one counts 4,000 coins per minute, so it doesn't take too long to get the coins ready to go back to the bank once I have eyeballed them.

Great site man.
Thanks everyone for your input. Now only to decide. I belong to a bank with several free coin counters. The only problem with using them is filling up the bags and getting all of those, "What in the world is he doing with all of those (insert coin type here)?", looks from the old ladies and little kids with coffee cups and piggy banks of coins. First come first serve....hehe. I think the bank employees like to see me because I never receive any slack from them. In fact they ask me if I will be needing pennies on this visit and about how many do I think I will need. Yes, I do buy from where I dump. I do not buy their coin machine bags though due to my usage. A Brinks box is a Brinks box, same with CWR. Wow long reply....rambled once again.
