Have any of you electronic sorters experimented with sizable samples of 1982 cents to determine a frequency of the two different compositions?

I have been isolating 82's for a while believing that the majority are 95% copper, but I have neither a comparator nor the patience to weigh them. Fudd

Its easily 75% copper to 25% zinc...maybe higher. But I have never done an exact study.

Most of us that do electonic sorting are too lazy to presort by date. This is why we are automated. Doesn't take a lot of patience to weigh them on the scale.. it is actually much more efficient than sorting them by eyeball. My sort rate doubled when I switched from using a magnifying glass to using a digital scale for my sorting. I think horgad is about right. I seem to remember about a 75/25 ratio being reported by guys that had a pile of 82's and eventually got around to sorting them out. I think original production was about 50/50. We atribute the better percentage now to the superior durability of the real cents.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

I see more than 85% copper 1982's, as estimated using the flip test (listening for the ringing sound of copper flipped in the air).

RUNNING TOTAL
---------------------------------------
3501 zincs (1982-2007) 75.4%
1106 coppers (1959-1982) 23.8%
31 wheats (1920-1958)
7 Canadian (1968-1995)
1 dime (2004)

i find that around 85% of my 1982's are copper. im still the old fashioned mid volume hand sorter. i sort 82's with the popsicle stick on a round pencil trick.

I have been gone for a week or so, but now I'm back. I gotta ask, in this day and age of technology, why are you guys "flipping" your '82's? I am in no way criticizing you guys personally. Digital scales that weigh in 1/10ths of a gram are pretty cheap. I would think more accurate as well. I understand there is a distinct sound that is made when it is flipped. Just wondering.

Deal

p.s. Popsicle stick on a pencil???? Please elaborate on this.

I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks.

Hello NotABigDeal,

For me, I guess I like doing things the old fashion way. Sure, I could get a machine that seperates copper and zinc cents, but that seems to take to fun out of sorting and finding 'special' finds. Also, the money I would use for convenience, I could use to purchase unsorted coins.

Now for rerolling the zinc cent, I may have to go 21st century on that.

yea yea i know im behind the times with the popsicle stick. i think im still more advanced than the flippers though :) i got the idea on an earlier post i read here - last year probably.

get yourself a round pencil and popsicle stick and some super glue. balance the popsicle stick on the pencil and glue it in place. then get a new zinc cent and glue on one side. just a little spot of glue so as not to throw off the weight too much. then treat it like a balance beam. heavy copper cent goes down, lighter zinc cent wont move.

i had a nice $10 scale for a while but then my girlfriend borrowed it and managed to break it. imagine that.

I also prefer to hand sort. This has always been a hobby for me, not a get-rich scheme. A parallel could be drawn from the California Gold Rush to today's copper cent hoarding - an old adage states "those who made the real money during the Gold Rush weren't the gold miners themselves, but the folks selling the picks and shovels". No offense, Ryedale.

Are you sure it was an accident? Maybe she is just trying to keep you from sorting. Don't let her borrow the pencil and popcicle stick. Actually, I really like the pencil and popsicle stick idea. If I didn't already have a couple of nice digital scales I think I would have rigged up one of those also.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

Clarification: I am a hand sorter. I just use digital scales to speed it up a little. I love hand sorting....I just hate the totaling-up of the coppers. Thanks for explaining the popsicle stick thing. Pretty clever.

p.s. Why is it when I run spellcheck it wants to capitalize the word popsicle? Odd.

Popsicle is a registered trademark. Perhaps that's why.

Okay, what do you call that stick that hangs out of the off brand fruit-flavored-frozen-ice-on-a-stick snack? Without making a copyright infringement of course.
