I remember turning in aluminum soda cans at the local gracery store when I was a kid. They had a scale in the front of the store and a trailer outside to store them in.

are there any stores that do that now?
It was GREAT as a kid, I could go out and collect a trash bag full of cans, take them to the store for cash and buy candy & soda. HEAVEN!!!

When I was a kid you could pick up soda pop bottles and return them for the three cent deposit. That was a lot of money back in 1961.

We used to get a nickel for a pop bottle. My friends and I would ride our bikes around looking for bottles. After we found one or two we would go to the corner store and buy penny candy or ice cream.

Those were the days...

Actually this goes back to the ethics thread a little. I remember doing the glass recycling thing when it first got started as Boy Scouts and we picked out all the returnable glass bottles so that we could get the money and split it between us. This thread shows a little age....

The difference between an optimist and a pessimist is that the pessimist is better informed.

Returnable bottles wow.

My first job was picking up the boxes on the grocery store floor at 0300 after the clerks put price tags on each and every item. I was the guy who crushed and baled them.

I also had to organize and crate up the bottles for return to the vendors. That was a filthy job.

Do they even make returnable bottles now ? They used to actually clean and refill them.

Remember the pulltabs on the Al cans, before the pop tops? The damn things were everywhere on the ground.

Remember When Al cans replaced the tins. The tin had a big seem on the side.

we collected soda bottles too, I think we got 10cents credit per bottle but it might have only been 5cents. I'm not sure about that but I remember taking several empty bottles to the Highs store to get a full one for free.

I had a wagon I dragged to all the neighbor's homes. I asked for bottles and they usually gave them to me.

I got 2 cents for small ones and 5 cents for big ones. The man at the grocery store probably dreaded the sound of my clinking bottles as I approached.

Still have a dairy around the area where I live that milk and oj comes in deposit/returnable glass jars. I hate to say it but the milk in these glass jugs taste much better to me than plastic jugs

when i was a kid in the 40s,early 50s, we could leave the house broke, walk 9 miles in any dirrection, depending which town had the best movie, we would pick up beer and soda bottles all way, 2 cents for small bottles and a nickle for the qt bottles, by the time we got to the town, we'd have enough money for the movies, pop corn, candy, ciggs.
