Hi All,
So i'm a little excited and wanted to share a recent find i made on Craigslist. A seller of a small lot of wheat pennies ($25 face) posted that he wanted to sell these fast or he was returning them to the bank. I emailed him and said i'd take them tell me what you want for them since you're going to return them to a bank. He replied that same day, "it's actually $35 face and for $50 bucks they are your's". I may be the last person to purchase coins, since I enjoy the hunting in CWR's and Fed wrapped rolls, but i agreed to this deal and will be picking them up in a couple days. With the travel costs (damn tolls) the coins will be purchased at a little over 2x face value. So i figure not a bad trade.
Though i did ask the seller a couple times to confirm the pennies are all wheaties, which he did. I'll definitely be eyeballing a large sample to confirm this. He mentioned something about not searching these for any rare '72's, But he did say the are all wheat pennies.
This seller also mentioned that he had halves and other silver coinage he is willing to sell. This makes me think this is too good to be true. So i let him know i am happy to see his collection when i pick up the pennies, and will make an offer if they are anything i'd want. This way i'm not bringing excess amount of cash (perhaps i'm being a little paranoid here).
now that i know how to post pictures, i'll post anything i find that happens to be worth mentioning.

That would be a nice change from my dreadful Ag % find this year so far. A 09 VDB would be nice, but i'm not expecting anything to rare. |

I appreciate all the concern. I sent the info to a family member and i'll be on the phone before i arrive with instructions of if i don't call in 20 minutes please send police to this address.
The seller is kind enough to let me come today after work so i'll be down there this evening. I'll definitely post anything i find tomorrow. I'm a pretty trusting individual.
For future trades and CL dealings i'll make sure to request a public spot. Though i must say, I've met people in public spots and at their homes in equal amounts thus far, so this isn't really that big of a difference, 'cept it'll be at night.
Heh, it would be unusual for me if i don't post somehting by noonish EST tomorrow.
If i can't afford the other coins or i don't want them, I'll post his asking prices here if anyone just incase anyone is at all interested. |

And exactly what would the police do after 20 minutes? Clean up the mess? Take pictures? Ask questions?
Any time money is changing hands you should be in a public place and armed. Or if the passive stance is what suits you, have a buddy come along or just be where you are going. I hope your Craig's list experience was positive. I have purchased several coins (mostly silver) from Craig's list posts. To date, the people have been very good to work with and the transactions have all gone very smoothly. My wife is a "stamper" so she made me a couple of home-made business cards to carry with me when meeting people on Craigs list. I let them know that I am a private collector and leave them with the cash and my contact information. I have had "repeat" contacts in the weeks following from either the same seller or a new contact that I was referred to me. Word of mouth is the best manner for building a positive reputation. The willingness to be flexible on location an time is also very important. Of course, paying in cash and in person is a big plus too. Looking forward to seeing anything unique or special you find in the lot.

SORRY TO EVERYONE THAT WORRIED ABOUT ME. I didn't mean to cause any problems here...
sorry about that. I forgot the following day was a thursday. I actually was going to post the pictures, but then i couldn't get my tiff's to load on any of the photo sites i'm a member at. I usually don't surf the web thursdays.
The guy was nice enough to let me pick up the coins before he went to Ash Wednesday evening mass. I couldn't find his home so we met in the church parking lot. So it was in public afterall.
not a bad score i bought $34 dollars in pennies ($1.8 happened to be a mix of lmc's both copper and zincs) for $50. Which made the wheats a deal at 1.55 cents per wheat.
The majority was 40-50 dates. And i only came away with 50 coins from the twenties and teens. Some dates were '11, '14, '20, '24. Nothing really fancy. Though many of the wheats did look like they had not been out of their wrapper in some time. Also there was about 15 steel pennies in a wide degree of condition
Again i hope no one here was overly concerned.
Kind regards! ~JobIII |

From my first experience where i made it to the actual purchase. I must say i'm very happy. Most of the time i see ads on CL for overpriced items or people who are going to try to get the highest possible asking price.
This seller was friendly and honestly didn't want a big amount for the coins. I didn't ask how he came into the collection, but he was going to return them to a bank if no one wanted them. The wheats were mostly common dates, with the exception on 2 BU coins, 1947 P & 1951 S. Some dates in the teens and many that looked VF or better in the 20's and thirties. I breezed through the rolls looking for key dates so the majority are in a bucket that will be sorted later per decade. Some Steelies too were found, ranging in condition from circulated to lightly circulated.

HE IS ALIVE!!!
Good deal. I am glad it worked out. You got em cheap.
I have bought a number of items on CL. I have been to several ppl's homes to pick the stuff up. I only went in one, but there were 3 of us and the desk was heavy(but free )
You have to be careful. If it is coins, then they should be able to meet publicly since they are easy to transport. |

Thank goodness! You could have left us in suspense for another day or two, but it seemed to work out today.
Sounds like you dealt with a nice guy who was flexible with your meeting location, so I'm happy that it all went smoothly. I haven't done anything on CL, but some of my friends and family say that a lot of the people they deal with there aren't as nice or willing. |

I was much less worried when the guy told me i had to be there before 7pm mass. Not saying that religious people aren't violent. I had no luck using Google.maps, it would appear that one of the last streets i needed to turn on was either not labeled correctly or i kept missing it but i got lost in the last mile to his home. Believe it or not, but it was the traffic that nearly did me in. I had to drive through a city and it was horrible, stop & go traffic most of the way there and I saw 2 accidents on the way to getting my coins to my house.
The second accident i actually flagged a cop who was talking on his cell. I rolled up next to him put my window down and told him there was an accident back down the street a 1/3 of a mile, you might want to check it out. One car was T-boned by the other and they were in the middle of a busy street .
