Are any of you successful silver hunters in or near a large populated city or concentrated in particular states?
I've been actively searching pocket change for 10 years, and periodically buying half dollar rolls at various bank chains and branches in both Chicagoland and Silicon Valley for a couple years. I've only found 1 silver quarter in all that time. Never found any silver at any bank.
My most recent generic/non-US Mint $20 half dollar roll from Wells Fargo was 100% 2001-D, which I thought was unusual. That's the only remarkable thing I can say for my efforts.
Either I'm doing something very wrong, searching in very much the wrong places/states/cities, or not being obsessive enough and buying more every week. It's hard to even FIND banks that carry half dollars, let alone more than a few rolls at a time.
On a related note, I don't know how you guys on this forum get boxes of coins. (How many halves in a box anyway?) Wells Fargo wants to charge extra for boxes of coins.

Welcome to the forum toofastforyahuh. Silver searchers have been successful in both of those locations as well as many others. I am near Silicon Valley myself and have had reasonably good luck, though I don't order boxes of halves. Mostly it is a volume and luck thing. If you do enough volume, sometimes you get lucky.
Check out this thread for other members' hints and stories as well as a map of regional silver percentages: You must be logged in to see this link.
You will notice many members often get skunked on one $500 box after another.. but eventually they get a win. One reason I like sorting pennies is that there is a winner in every box. Getting coins from banks can be a challenge. Each bank has its own policies.. and these will very from branch to branch of the same bank. Never pay a fee. For getting rid of your coins, I believe there is a Credit Union down in Silicon Valley that has a free lobby coin counting machine. That way you won't have to reroll and deposit. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

| Also welcome to the board and what HCBTT says that getting silver is truly a hit or miss deal. My biggest problem is just finding halves to go through. |

Welcome to the forum TooFast.
Half Dollars come in $10 per roll (i didn't know if you had a special roll when you said $20 roll), and $500 to a box pennies - $25 box Dimes - $250 box nickels - $200 box (i may be wrong here) quarters - $500 a box
Getting boxes is hit or miss at some locations. The key is making your goals clear to the tellers, and if the tellers are friendly you are set for at least a while. Most banks have 1 day they receive coinage. Some are a little reserved to let you know the day this takes place. But you shouldn't have to pay a charge for boxes. If a bank does ask for this, it's a polite way of saying we don't want your business here, and you can always make that bank a return bank for the coins you don't want.
One thing i've noticed in searching for silver, is you may be the only one doing it in your area the returns are great, then they go down and stay low. Be ready to transport lots of coins that you will be returning, as well as see a pile of ag coins grow.
Good luck on the searches!

I agree on the hit or miss on boxes or rolls but RV traveling makes it even harder as to order a $500 bow you need to wait a week to get, have not been told there was a charge. Small town banks have been easy to work with so far. Hope you see the point of sorting its a hunt to get a coin at face value, but your time has to be worth nothing Especially if you need to roll coins back up to return. Good Luck searching.
Nickels are $100 a box. |

I am lucky enough to have a bank that orders boxes for me. I know it is a hassle for them, but I am nice to them and that goes a long way. The first time I ever went into the bank, they said they wouldn't order them for me. They were afraid of getting in a bunch and having to sit on them. I had to get my wife to agree to let me tie up $1000 in halves. Once I told the bank I would take both, they agreed. By that time, I had been in there often enough for them to recogize me.
Also, sometimes halves do come in $20 rolls. I got some empty $20 wrappers from a bank on Monday. I am going to use them to wrap my silver. That way I will never confuse those rolls with ones that I am turning back in.
As has been said, it is hit or miss. I went through 8 boxes in Jan and was for the most part skunked on 7 of them. Same in Dec. The one good box in Dec had 40-40% halves in it. It is a long term thing. Persistance and patience pay off eventually. |

| I would like to add that the pay off is not equal. And if you get serious about this like Knibloe said, there are periods where you will not find silver in perhaps 2 dozen boxes. |

Welcome to RC!
Another thing to ask the tellers about is the availability of half rolls in the "back" or vault. Often when you ask a teller for halves they will just say they have a few loose in their tray. If you let them know your looking for a large quantity and ask nicely if there are some in the vault, they'll remember about the stash in the back and get the vault teller. Not always, but worth asking. |

So true. The last big score I got came from a bank that 2 months before, an old crabby teller immediately said they didn't have any in the back. I go back in that location about a week and a half ago and go up to a different teller and she goes in the back and brings out several and sais "I'm so glad to get these out of here, they've been sitting back there as long as I can remember." 66 of those were silver. Gotta keep trying and trying and trying and... |

WELCOME!
I've posted some statistics on SILVER searching by state. So far, I see the best searching done in the Southern states of the USA. I suggest checking out the thread that Hoard mentioned to get an idea of what's being found by everyone.
Try to find a small local bank or a credit union to get half boxes for you at no fee.
