This was for ALL our 1909-1939 Lincoln finds from January 1 through August 8th, when the new thread was created. This is for "true finds" only - coins found in change, rolls, or bags at face value only, not from wheat purchases.

I have a 2010 jar of pre 40 cents that has probably 50-75 in it....I have no idea if any of the dates are key or semi-key...I like the idea of the thread, hopefully it will spur me into learning more about the dates. I sort by machine, and only pull ones that jump out and bite me, I let the rest go by.. |
visit www.crazycoinguy.com for information on how to sort, what to sort, and sorting equipment. We also sell copper pennies in bulk, and other coins. |

As most of you already know, I am a hand sorter. And right now my fingers are all grungy and grubby and feeling really icky. Some wrappers just react differently with the coins and turn them gross.
Found during January, 2010: 1/1937, 1/1927
All of the other wheats were 1940s or newer.
Thanks, Uthminsta!
Enjoy your coin searches, everyone.

Be interesting to see who finds more key dates, Ryedale-user's or handsorters. Machine sorters process a heck of a lot more pennies, but most probably don't take the time (non-productive) to examine them. I know I don't take the time to sieve out the wheaties unless I spot them. Just as an experiment, I looked through one box the other night of already sorted cents and found about 23 wheaties. Took me forty minutes though. I will forego looking for wheaties until I can't sort anymore, it's not a good use of my time. |
Hoard now and hold on!

I don't really keep track of my finds. But if i find anything worth more than $5 i'll make sure to post it. Though i believe the online price guides are for BU coins, and i'm not finding any pre 30's in that condition.
Nice finds everyone. Also, my .02, Ryedale-user's are finding more semi / key dates. Since the numbers we process are larger, and wheats are basically even spaced around the country. It's simple more random hits the larger numbers of coins you sort.
Not saying anything bad about handsorters |

Here's a list of the pre-40 wheats with mintages under 20 million. How far into the list would you go for KEYS? Under 3 million? Under 5 million? Under 10 million? And how far down the list would be the cutoff for SEMI-KEYS? 1909SVDB 484,000 1931S 866,000 1914D 1,193,000 1909S 1,825,000 1924D 2,520,000 1911S 4,026,000 1914S 4,137,000 1912S 4,431,000 1931D 4,480,000 1926S 4,550,000 1915S 4,833,000 1910S 6,045,000 1913S 6,101,000 1933D 6,200,000 1922D 7,160,000 1923S 8,700,000 1932P 9,062,000 1912D 10,411,000 1932D 10,500,000 1924S 11,696,000 1911D 12,672,000 1927S 14,276,000 1933P 14,360,000 1939D 15,160,000 1938S 15,180,000 1921S 15,274,000 1913D 15,804,000 1928S 17,266,000 1931P 19,396,000 The mintage and value aren't DIRECTLY linked. That may seem obvious to some of you, but some of the variations seem a little too much. For instance, the 1931D has a mintage of under 4.5 million but a G4 value of only a couple bucks, while the 1909VDB has a mintage of nearly 28 million and a G4 value of $8-9. (Values according to numismedia). But I was trying to determine a fair way to divide the coins into two groups, because the coins found aren't always going to be of the same grade, so simply using G4 value (or VG8 or whatever) to group them up doesn't make sense to me. |

Here's a list of the coins with G4 values over $1 from numismedia. Perhaps a $10+ should be a key and a $2+ should be a semi-key? 1909 S VDB $730.00 1922 $670.00 1914 D $186.00 1909 S $79.35 1931 S $78.20 1911 S $19.55 1924 D $19.55 1912 S $14.95 1922 D $12.08 1914 S $10.06
1909 VDB $8.63 1915 S $8.34 1910 S $7.19 1913 S $6.90 1912 D $6.04 1911 D $4.60 1913 D $2.53 1931 D $2.30 1909 $2.13 1926 S $2.01
1933 D $1.90 1921 S $1.73 1923 S $1.67 1915 D $1.55 1916 S $1.27 1912 $1.15 1932 $1.15 1915 $1.09 1933 $1.04
Another drawback of using a dollar amount for groupings is that these are of course subjective, AND they change over time. Whereas the mintages don't. |

And yes, I realize that some people find hundreds or thousands of pre-40 Lincolns, but don't take the time to catalog them or post them here. This thread couldn't possibly be an all-inclusive RealCent inventory. But for those who will take the time to post them, I will keep a list, at least for the foreseeable future. |

I have not been sorting as many pennies as previously...now really concentrating on the halves.
However, I looked at the wheat pile from January and the two most memorable were 1909 & 1928-D. The 1909 is bordering on a slick, but the date is clearly readable.

I think age obviously factors in some of these values. Perhaps popularity, too. The 1909VDB has a disproportionately high value compared to its mintage; it's over a hundred years old, and it's probably collected more for the simple fact that it represents the FIRST Lincoln.
I finally found my wheats from my sorts so far this year. Only one: 1934. |

I know for sure that I have hundred of them.....but.....what good will they do me? any real money in them?.....I am not talking about 0.25 or so for each of them.
Remember that I started collecting them in 1977.......loose change that is. |
