I believe that the 1940 English One Shilling is 50% silver.

Anyone know of other years for this coin that were silver???

The U.K. Shilling was 50% Ag 1920 thru `46. Prior to that it was 92.5% Ag.

With the exception of the 3 Pence (`36) and the Crown (`37), `46 was the last year for circulated Ag coinage from the U.K.

Threepence were minted in both silver (tiny round) and brass (large 12-sided) from 1937-1944.

Crowns, halfcrowns, florins, shillings, sixpence, threepence were sterling (925 fine) silver until 1919.
Then all these coins were 500 fine from 1920-1946, then copper nickel.
SOME sixpence pieces were sterling in 1920, but you can assume that if you have a 1920 it's 500 fine.

Can't really add to this. WW2 really hit the Brits hard - they dropped silver almost 20 years before we did.

And he that hath lyberte ought to kepe hit wel / For nothyng is better than lyberte / For lyberte shold not be wel sold for alle the gold and syluer of all the world.

I have some silver UK coins, mostly 50% half crowns, but I have a few 92.5 as well. I like the older ones, but I'm cheap and have a hard time winning them for what I want to pay!

Are you throwing that out?

I'm usually open to a trade. I'll look through what I have and see if any of mine are some you need.

The British Maundy coins from 1920 to 1946 were also .500 fine silver as well.

In 1947,the fineness of the Maundy coins were restored back to the current .925 fineness.

Thanks for the link. It's a nice site to identify a coin but it didn't give me the composition of a coin I just looked up, so that puts me back to square one when trying to determine the composition of the coin.
