I was leaving work yesterday and there several boxes of old computer parts in the dumpster.

One was a box of old floppy disk drives.

Another box had what looked like motherboards?? They were computer boards with a lot of those chips sticking out.

Is there anything scrap worthy in that lot?

If I remember right, there are gold pins connecting the CPU to the motherboard. I know electronics recycling is quite profitable in PM reclamation.

I have fun scrapping old computers, printers, copiers, etc. Steel cases and drive components, and aluminum hard drive frames go to the scrap yard. Circuit boards, processors, memory, hard drive platters (after being run across a magnet) get sold on eBay for PM recovery. The hard drive magnets get stuck to the side of my workbench for later use. Those little buggers come in handy...

Sure would, $1.00 per pound shipped to my address. You can email me at simplicitycounts@yahoo.com. $10.00 a pound for processors if separated, $3.00 a pound for memory / ic chips separated. The closer you get to filling a box the better off you are. I've managed to fit 67 or so pounds in a large square mailing boxes, like the ones they used to use for mailing crt monitors. They have to be motherboards or pci boards for the $1.00 a pound, boards from routers, modems, networking etc are fine as well. No power supply boards, the don't have any precious metals on them.

Wow, $1.00 a pound for motherboards- shipped??? Holy cow, my local yard just paid me $2.50 a pound for them! $6.00 a pound for memory, and .55 a pound for whole hard drives.

Better look around for a local buyer first.

Those are good prices silversaddle. Not all yards purchase ewaste. In most towns people have to pay to dispose of electronics.

As you all know prices are different for all kind of scrap depending on where you live. Best bet call around to different yards to find the best price. Look at the differences in prices on the "What did you scrap this week" page you will see prices vary alot...

So how is the metal recycled out of motherboards?

They are refined through grinding and a chemical process. Similar to when people melt down 40% halves, or 90% coins the impurities are removed until you have a pure metal. The process is expensive and the metal retrieved from the boards is minimal, but they still have value.

If the laptop is newer it would be worth more as parts on ebay.
