Hey all,
I found a couple lots of scrap aluminum (from spent flares) from a government auction. The seller informed me I have to mutilate the metal before I can get title to it. Any ideas on how I can accomplish this? I think the approximate weight was around 850 pounds.
Thanks! Tom

Without knowing what form the Al is in, hard to say. How about taking a Sawsall to the pieces? |

What is the definition of mutilate? Maybe you could just squash them. What are they, shell casings? There's got to be way to make that work. Some of those flare casings are big it might be worth it to have a couple guys spend a day with hammers making them un-reloadable. You might be able to "mutilate" them with one strike with a hammer or shovel or...? |

Best I could find was how to scrap a M151 Truck. And a bunch of sites on Cow Mutilations.

Remember the primers are part brass. I am not sure how you would go about destroying that many They don't weigh much maybe 1/3 - 1oz each. |
Selling Ryedale sorted USA cents 1.5 each + shipping over 500fv 1.5 each +1/2 shipping If you pick up 1.35 each located MT/ND boarder. after Ryedale sorting they are hand sorted to remove canadian then rechecked with Ryedale to insure all copper and count out $50 FV then placed in cloth bags and sealed with #1 copper wire. |

I would ask the seller to what extent the item needs to be mutilated. Maybe just need to grind off any military ID #'s or something. They are pretty good about working with potential buyers from my experience. |

From what the person said, all I have to do is alter the object enough to where it cannot serve it's original purpose. So I asked how people normally mutilate the metal and I was told that is my responsibility to figure it out...lol.
I think squashing or crushing them is the best idea. I may see if I can rent a baler or something.
Or that shredder looks awesome....man I need one of those.
Thanks for all the help! Tom |

SO are these shell casings... I'm not picturing a flare as a shell or cartridge. What size are they? Are there thousands of them or just 500 to a 1000?
Any chance of a picture, cause I'm real curious now.
Why didn't the gov just do the mutilation ....would have been easier. |

If it's a shell casing, you just punch a large hole or two in the side halfway down.

Rent a little landscape tractor and sqaush it. Load it with the blade. It could be a profitable score. Just make sure your buyer is ready.
Hey you should be able to pick this load up, Run over to Cape Canaveral for the Free shuttle engines. Boy that's scrappin. |

You need to watch out with some of the Signal Flares and especially the CADS (Cartridge Actuated Devices, the small silver things in pictures 9, 10, 16 and 18) as they may contain heavy metal residue. I looked real quick in one of my references and they contain: Oxides of Strontium and Phosphorus, Cadmium, Toluene and other toxic hazards.
As far as mutilation goes, you can crush, shred, perforate or melt them. |
