| I would guess it would depend on age and quality ie #1 or #2 clean or what % is corrode. Old wire is not as pure as todays wire. I would guess new tube and wire would be 3 9's or better. |
Selling Ryedale sorted USA cents 1.5 each + shipping over 500fv 1.5 each +1/2 shipping If you pick up 1.35 each located MT/ND boarder. after Ryedale sorting they are hand sorted to remove canadian then rechecked with Ryedale to insure all copper and count out $50 FV then placed in cloth bags and sealed with #1 copper wire. |

Thank you. I am dabbling with the idea of buying a furnace and melting scrap.I thought that it was mostly pure but wasn't sure. Also as I am new here, do many of you melt and make your own ingots??

I do, but I leave copper to another producer here. It can be a beast to work with.

For the majority, wire and pipe is 99.95% pure copper.
Kurr is right, casting copper can be a real beastly process. Gold and silver are slightly easier, but still a good challenge. I offer casting services for gold and silver. Copper casting is not offered at this time. |

| I too am interested in learning to melt and cast copper. Was going to build a furnace in the backyard last summer and give it a try but never got around to it. Need to learn more. Maybe an electric induction furnace would be simpler. |

| I have scrapped metal now for over 10 years! Just this year i have become interested in coins.(A little late but I am trying to hoard as much as possible. As a child my father and I melted lead and made jigs to go walleye fishing it was a little tedious but all the same we produced more than we used and sold off the extra. Now I am interested in melting copper which I get in abundance. Does anyone know of the best method to make ingots? |

Copper wire as far as number 1 or number3 and so on is determined by its diameter not age. With Copper plumbing if you make cuts along the soldered joints you will bring it up on that scale. Meaning more money. I have had the luxury of dealing directly with large scrap yards and have learned a few tricks. Here is a hint to receiving better numbers at your scrap yard. In the summer I bring bottled water to all the guys! If I go early to take in a load i stop and spend 5-10 bucks on Breakfast burritos at Micky D's and hand them to the workers. Mostly I look to make nice with the foreman as he is the on who can give you a premium price on your metal. |

You know, I never thought of that. Good thinking, new guy! We all talk about giving chocolate to the tellers at the banks, but this is a good idea! |
