How old we talking? If they still work you could donate to charity and take the write-off. Just an idea.

And he that hath lyberte ought to kepe hit wel / For nothyng is better than lyberte / For lyberte shold not be wel sold for alle the gold and syluer of all the world.

They still have refrigerant in them?

Probably aluminum over copper coils, so there is some scrap value.

Once the refrigerant is recovered, remove the coils and cut the copper loops and the metal piece off the ends. Now you have clean Al/Cu coils. Should bring around $1 per pound. Motors can be scrapped as well. All wire can be scrapped. Probably minimal amount per unit, but if you have 50, it will add up. That should do it. Unless you want to scrap the "shells" of the units. Perhaps 7-10¢ per pound? I don't scrap these.

Perhaps I need to read better, I now see they are window units. I forgot to mention the compressors. Must be empty of all oil, and maybe drilled? Not sure, I don't do those either. Don't forget the power cords.

If they work they're worth more money as a an AC unit. I see them sell at yard sales for $25-$100 and people pay the price. Put in ad in your newspaper and on craigslist.

I'd do what Farmall said, have them running when they come to pick them up, but as is. Start in May, you can repost your ad for free.

Don't be afraid of the way the look. If some of the are ugly but still cool they are still worth 25-30 bucks. That's what I sold the ones that didn't even have front covers on them.

I'd start with a nail file and some elbow grease, but..... a saw zaw will probably do better.

DO NOT CUT WITH A TORCH!!! The oil puts off a dangerous gas.

Mistero, dont know if you know of any places up there but around here there is a guy that specializes in the refurbing of A/c units. He'll take your old ones and give you credit on new/refurb units from him. He sends out literature to apartment building owners every year...

I use a angle grinder with a metal cutting disk. cut horizonally all around about 1/2 way up. unbolt the windings, then when out you will see the crown of copper coming out of the top. Cut it flush with the metal then pull the copper out of the other side. Really easy sometimes, sometimes hard.

Thanks, That's exactly what I was looking for. I've got a few snow days and a lot of this junk to cut up. I never sell the compressors because I knew there was a way to get the copper out.

I agree a Matabo or metal grinder with a cutting wheel is the best way to open a compressor!

Thanks cptindy,

I read you posts, you sound like an experienced scrapper, and I appreciate your advise. I run about 2-14 foot trailerloads a month(it's become part of my job)

Welcome aboard, and thanks for the info.
