On the way home, I stopped by the store to purchase something. In my change was a penny and a dime. So, with hopes of finding a copper penny or two within ten pennies, I asked the cashier if I could have 10 pennies out of the dime. She says "Okay, so nine pennies?" I'm thinking, "No, 10 pennies." She thought that the one penny I got in change was the tenth one or something. Therefore, I ended up with only nine pennies and the one from the change. I was stunned that anyone would think that way, after all, it's not too much to understand! Even though it is just one penny, it is baffling.
Oh well. One of those nine pennies was a copper one from 1974, so that made up for that lost penny. :-)

You should have showed her the place on the dime where it says "10 cents" I would have insisted on the full 10 pennies. That 10th penny was probably copper.. if you assume a 20% copper yield.

Not to worry though. I found your tenth penny in the parking lot of the bank yesterday. And yes, it was copper! Whoohoo.. 100% yield for me!

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Cool! Yeah, on another stop the day after, I found two in a flower bed at a gas station: 1968, and 1981.

Not sure if you have these readily available. The next time you go to the store and the same cashier is there, pay in a combination of $2 bills, presient/Sac/SBA dollar coins and half dollars. You may just be able to hear the gears in hear head stop completely. I use these regularly and get reactions from laughter to disbelief to scorn. Ususally, the younger the cashier the better the reaction. You would think I just handed them monopoly money and Chucky Cheese tokens. Priceless.

Whenever, I can get my hands on any of those I love to spend them too and see the various reactions. One time when I was able to get a few halves I was spending two or three at one time and the question the cashier had to us: Are those the new 50 cent quarters??? At least she had part of it correct.

And, actually at the recent FUN Show I did spend a few as I made my sparse purchases. Their reaction was different but still comical to me. They immediately were checking them over to see if they were silver. As if someone at a coin show would be spending silver half dollars for a purchase!

I think if today's cashier's had to do all the change figuring in their heads rather than have the cash register do it for them, they wouldn't have a clue. When I was a little girl and would occasionally help out at my parents general grocery store, everything had to be figured in our heads and all change was counted back properly to the customer. Rather than just tossed into your hand as most do today.

Even more amazing to me is the occasional bank teller that I encounter that looks as if they are scared to death of the money they are handling and trying to count accurately. Its like they are in a struggle with the money and the money is winning. They come across as being so ill-at-ease that I wonder why they are working there at all.

Kirkland...I, too, would have politely stood my ground and requested the penny that had been shorted me. Yes, it is only a penny, but it is the principle that is important and you were entitled to ten pennies for one dime.

Enjoy your coin searches, everyone.

Did she use her fingers and toes to count you the change. This is a scary thought. Without the register to rely on to tell them how to dispense change she is in trouble. A fast change con artist would love her.

Yeah, guys, I know. I just didn't want to make a big statement, because there were people behind me waiting to check out too. I agree that a penny is more than just a penny, and I'd normally have requested the other penny.

wait until the register shows the change to be .93 and give the cashier .07 to make it a dollar. They look like a deer staring into headlights.

When i was in middle school, my parents ran a convenience store. I saw plenty of wanna be flim flam artists. My mom was the best. She would slam the till shut and tell them to leave. She was a pistol back then.

Last week I went to a branch of my bank I don't normally use. I told the teller I wanted to "exchange the rolls for different penny and nickle rolls". she counted the rolls, went to the till and counted out my bills equal to the rolls. I again informed her, I wanted to "exchange the rolls for different penny and nickle rolls".

She looked at me like I had 3 heads and said with a tone in her voice "Why? I've never had anyone request this before". (I managed to turn my internal anger towards ignorant people to spite and replied) "Im a neumismatis". Pregnant pause, 3 headed look turns to glazed. Then, "oh, ok". Clueless, She exchanges my rolls.

All in a day's work, madame.

My favorite is handing a cashier somethign like $20.35 cash for a $17.35 purchase. About 50% of the time they look at the "extra" 35 cents like I have lost my mind. Sometimes I have to coax them to key it into the register. When my change comes back in even dollars they think I am a magician.

LOL. I know how funny these cashiers are. Last year, at a grocery store, I saw some rolls of nickels in the cash register so I thought why not buy those? Well I did and the cashier thought nothing of it (amazing). Well, every* nickel roll had a silver war nickel in it! So I went back looking for more. I exchanged rolls of nickels for other rolls of nickels and the girl thought I was nuts! But she didn't question it, but says "Other rolls of nickels?" and I said Yup. Well I found a war nickel in these rolls too so I kept going back to the store for about a week doing this until I stopped finding them. Once a cashier gave me 8 dollars extra when I bought all of the coins from the register (I had spotted a wheat penny in the tray). I returned the 8 dollars and she didn't even say Thanks! But I'm happy with myself regardless.

Go back to the same store and give the same cashier a half dollar.

Ask for 99 cents change.

That won't work. The reverse of a dime says "ONE DIME".

This is one of my big gripes about drive thru fast food lanes. They aren't fast if dummies are manning the windows. Like Slick says, if you give them a bit of change after they've keyed it, so that you'll get even bills back, half the time they need to call the manager over to figure it out. Otherwise, they just stand there, stunned. Second big gripe... how many times have you gone thru the drive thru and told them "I want a double cheeseburger, by itself, alone, with nothing else (emphasizing those words)... and the very next thing they ask you is 'do you want to make that a combo?'" Grrrrh

Hoard now and hold on!
