Poll Question:
Well, I did it. I opened a bank account just for the purpose of buying pennies. One my source banks told me that from now on, in order to purchase boxes of pennies I would need to open an account, which I did. It was a little annoyed, but I guess I understand their position. I was further mollified by the free collapsible cooler they gave me, which will be pressed into service this weekend.
Anyway, my question is: Excluding your main bank, how many bank accounts have you opened for the purpose of buying pennies and other coins (nickels, halves. . .etc)?
Bonus question: What is the best free gift you've received for opening an account?

I've also closed accounts because they decided to begin charging me a fee.
bonus: It wasn't offered by the bank, but the manager now gives me all the coins from a charity fountain that he runs after I opened a business account with his bank.
The best offical gift I got was 2 car tool kits and a travel cooler for opening one savings account... the manager of the bank practically begged me to open one because the whole staff got a bonus if they opened X number of new accounts. I leveraged this to get the extra goodies. I even told them that I'll be closing it the following week. She didn't seem to care. |

Hmmm. Not bad. I suppose someone is getting(or got?) a tool kit for Christmas. : ) Your coin fountain agreement sounds like a great arrangement.
Why do you think they start charging you fees? Is it a direct reaction to your ordering too many boxes; or is it a random change in bank policy? I'm only going to grab a box or two per branch so hopefully I can avoid that. |

List is way too short.. More than 10?
Best gift.. $100 cash.. sure it's fiat.. but those generic gift certificates come in handy for buying pennies.
Best non-cash gift.. 2 tickets for the season opener of the Raiders along with an insulated carrying bag for carrying either picnics or pennies. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

Four total....one at a credit union, one savings at my regular bank, one biz account at my regular bank, and one personal checking at my regular bank.
Best gift.....hmmm...I know I didnt get one when I opened the credit union account, or savings account, or biz account. I think I got a Coleman cooler when I opened the checking account about 16 years ago. Still have it too!
No cool stuff like Raider tickets. |

| Only opened one bank account to dump halves. My source bank is a Brinks bank, my dump bank (10 branches) is a Dunbar bank. |

The tellers were not charging me a fee to get the boxes. I think they talked about it to their manager and then the fees started. I asked the manager about it and she pulled out a fee schedule for business accounts. Apparently, the tellers were supposed to be charging me the whole time, but made a mistake. I do not know whether there are fees or not for personal accounts. I let the manager know about my dissatification. But she did nothing.
I decided to close the account when I did some regular checking at a branch for my business. After the that was taken care of, I handed over 6 rolls of halves to exchange for cash. A week later I was looking at my online statement and noticed a fee of 60 cents. I called the bank to find out why there was a charge on my account and the guy told me that it was because of coins. That did it for me... I'm done with the bank over 60 lousy cents! |

| No bonuses for me. Both of mine are credit unions. 1 Bank also opened for dealing in coins and currency (Buy $2 bills and bricks of $1 occasionally), but not for the purpose of sorting pennies. I have used the bank occasionally to dump. |

4 total for me. I have accounts at two credit unions and two banks. However I now get all of my pennies from one credit union and dump them all at one bank. Luckily because of where I live and work, I am able to get pennies from three different branches of the credit union and dump pennies at 5 different branches of the bank. Of all 8 branches they are at worst 4 miles out of the way of my normal routes.
In oponing accounts I have received 50 dollars cash once, 50 dollar gas card, and a toolset. |

| I have a total of 3 accounts. I use to have 4 accounts. I didn't receive anything when I opened the accounts but my main bank is always giving me freebies. I've received a George Forman grill, backpacks, coolers. |

More than 5 here. I got $100 once and $50 another time, but nothing else. Unless all the free dimes in their bags count....

I just opened a new one today because I finally found a bank with a free counter for account holders.
I did get $125 once for opening an account, but that is the only thing I have ever received from opening an account. |

The poll question was how many did you open for the purpose of buying coins. So, my answer is zero. When I already had accounts open at more than one financial institution, I have not had a need to open accounts just for the purpose of being able to buy coins. YET! I say yet because if I can find a bank that I could get coins loose in bags, then I might consider doing it for that purpose.
Don't get my husband started on the free gift thing! He teases our regular teller unmercifully that we have never received any of their free gifts since we already had accounts with them before they started this practice. They have offered some very nice premiums too for opening a NEW account.
Enjoy! |

| I've got 3. The only free thing I've ever gotten was a hard time from the tellers when I dump my coins. |
