Thought it would be interesting to track key date and semi-key date wheats found in circulation.
I found a nice looking 1926-S

| I haven't found any wheat penny that's a key date or semi-key date yet. My 1911 Wheat Penny is a common year, so it can't be counted. Eventually, I'm sure I'll find one. |

yesterday I got a 1910 S and 1914 D
the 1914D is extremely worn aka slick you have to hold it at a slight angle with good light to see the 914 the 1 and D are easier to see. But still a key date.. |

after Ryedale sorting they are hand sorted to remove canadian then rechecked with Ryedale to insure all copper and count out $50 FV then placed in cloth bags and sealed with #1 copper wire. |

| Nothing overly rare but today in one $50 bag I found the following: 1911, 1918, 1919, 1920(2), 1925, 1930(2), 1930D, 1934, 1935(3), 1936(3), 1937(2), 1939(2), 1943(2), 1943D. 20 Pre 1940 wheats and 3 steelies all in 1 bag. |

| The only find that comes to my mind of recent weeks is a 1909 plain. But that's about it. All the other wheats just go in the wheat bucket for another day of special sorting. I don't really have time to check the dates... Great finds all around you guys! |

| Just found a nice looking 1931 wheat penny in a roll from Wells Fargo. In it's condition, it is worth almost a dollar, according to my book. Not too valuable, but one of my best finds! |

| How about we keep track of all pre-40's? They're certainly not all keys or even semi-keys, but we could over time determine the relative obscurity of some dates. I would be willing to keep track of this, kind of like a (much) scaled-down version of the half dollar thread that Country is doing such great things with. |

Here's some info for you then if you wish to keep track of these.
Found during January, 2010: 1/1937, 1/1927
All of the other wheats were 1940s or newer.

Doesn't matter to me which one of you maintains the topic.
His original topic was for semi key date wheat tracking.
You are asking for pre-1940s for tracking, all of which are not key dates.
I posted the two pre-1940s that I found during January, 2010. Haven't found any semi-key dates, as far as I know. But, with me still learning anything is possible. I know my brother had to spoon feed me the info on key dates for nickels over the phone as I was clueless for the dates except for the 1950D.  |

| How do you rate a wheat to be a semi-key date? Is it by what the coin is valued? B/C a bunch of the teen years are worth about a dollar but i wouldn't call them semi-key dates... I'm interested to see this idea become something. Either in this post or a new one. |

| I think if someone does start this, they should construct it to record semi-key & key dates. Since the totals won't be that much more when you combine the two groups. |

I see. Well, I think that it should be covering all wheat pennies before 1940. Maybe not all of them are key or semi-key, but people like me who never find any IH's need to be able to talk about something!  |

NDFARMER, I'd like to do this, if you don't mind me "taking it."
What I was thinking was this:
Create a list of ALL pre-40 dates.
Then a category of semi-keys.
Then a category of keys.
Since those are loose descriptions, and they could very much depend on condition, I was going to use these as keys: 9SVDB, 09S, 14D, 31S, and any of the legendary errors that people happen to find like 55dd, 22noD, 44DoverS, 70Ssmall date, 69Sdd, 72dd, 83dd, 84d.ear, 95dd...
Semi-keys would be all other coins with mintages under 20 million? Or maybe slightly less/more? We can work that out.
Or even simpler, keys have mintages under 10 million, semi keys mintages of 10-20 mil. |
