Is there any metal detector small sensitive enough to pick up one silver nickel in a box of them? This would narrow your search time down to just looking in the right box. Tell me if you like the idea? If it will work?

Well, I don't think such a device exists, but you could easily set a RyeDale machine to sort out the silver ones - that wouldn't be as fast, but a lot faster than hand sorting.

The only metal detector produced to find just one metal was a gold locating metal detector. I suppose with some of the top-of-the-line metal detectors you could adjust it to only find one kind of metal (silver) though the cheapest high grade machines run about $800 when they are on sale.

Good point pencilvanian, to recoup $800 in silver nickels would take a while to say the least. |

I'll take a $100 metal detector any day. May not be able to destinguish one metal from another, but i've found all kinds of cool stuff with the cheapo i had. I found a really old really neat axe head one time.

I already have the $800 model. What can I say.. I really like my toys. I think you can program it to only accept reads in a certain range and set it to identify silver only but since I already have a Ryedale I will just use that.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

That is a tall order. Just about any metal detector be tuned to tell the difference between a nickel and silver nickel, but that is when they are sitting by themselves. All that interferace from the other nickels is going to be really hard to "see through".

I am for freedom and against the suppression of freedom whether it be by governments or other large institutions.
Democratic, communistic, republic, and other government types have all been founded with the same goal of freeing the people from oppressive conditions. Over widely varying times the ideals are lost and the people are again repressed regardless of what the government chooses to call itself.
It is an endless cycle...
As described by Dr. Alexander Tytler (written before the US existed as a nation):
"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence:
From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to selfishness; from selfishness to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependency back again into bondage."
To me, Che is a symbol of the struggle for freedom. In terms of the above cycle he represents "from courage to liberty". Think of him as Neo |

I'm going to blow the whistle on myself here in the interest of keeping things honest. I experimented with nickels, sorting for "war" nickels. The machine could not make a solid decision on what to do with them, I tried changing the standard coin, and adjusting the sensitivity, but it would not work well on those. It of course works great on Canadian .999 nickels, and CU/NI to Steel, etc, but those pesky silver containing nickels, were not consistent at all. If anybody has gotten it to work, please let me know how.

I'm going to give it a try this weekend. I haven't tried using the machine for nickels yet since I usually sort those by hand to get the good dates.

Footnote: The odd thing is, Che's likeness has turned into an image that has been sold to consumers as posters, T-shirts, backpacks, etc. (Che the capitalist? Boy, has the world ever turned upside down.)
