This article states the mint will cease all penny production after 2010. Pennies will not be legal tender in 2011 when the US Treasury will offer a buy back program to recapture the copper pennies.
Anyone heard about this?

Wow i just got an incredible head rush... that was fun. I'm totally not prepared for pennies to be phased out in the next 1.5 years.
I wonder if banks would still order pennies for us knowing that they would be gone in under a year. |

I don't think so. The Treasury would withdraw all the warehoused pennies from the system. |

| Why not just stop minting pennies for a while? Plenty of pennies in circulation. When the source starts to dry up they could mint some more. As long as businesses take them they will be used. |

I imagine that the Mint produces just enough pennies each year to keep the number that are circulating stable, or rising just a bit. There would be no reason for them to make more, particularly if it's at a loss. So does that mean five billion pennies disappear each year?  |

Remember that the penny-using population of the nation keeps growing, too. Also, US cash is also used officially in Panama, El Salvador, and Ecuador, and unofficially in many other places. |
