I decided to compare how copper fared versus the other precious metals since their epic downturn in late 2008. These are rough estimates but if you invested $1,000 back then until now:

Gold: plus $600 (if using its closing high a couple of weeks ago)
Platinum: plus $1200
Silver: plus $1230
Palladium: plus $1320
Copper: plus $1800!

So copper won hands down. And if you got the scrap #2 rate for copper which is maybe half of the going rate of copper then its still $900 profit which is still $300 more than gold!.

Here are the charts:

You're comparing pounds to ounces!
But, I guess it wouldn't matter if you owned it all on paper bought low and sold high (except maybe for the #2 scrap scenario).

There's profit if you melt things!!

It doesn't matter if I compare pounds to ounces. $1000 invested in 1.25 ounces of gold went up $600 whereas $1000 invested in 800 lbs of copper went up $1800.

So is now a good time to buy or sell?

The best way would be to sell them on this forum. You can avoid the fees and hassles of eBay. Be careful though, the market is flooded right now. Other members also may be leary to deal with you at first since you are such a new member. You may be able to find a trusted member to do business with, where you can ship first and when said member receives the cents they can then pay you.

ericsatwork I like that comparison, very interesting....I guess the big question is how or where do you hold that much copper?
I like copper too, but the logistics are difficult in large quantities.

visit www.crazycoinguy.com
for information on how to sort, what to sort, and sorting equipment. We also sell copper pennies in bulk, and other coins.
