Hi, I have been a reader for quite some time and decided to keep my pre 1982 pennies in a ziplock bag after reading your posts. Since Sept. 1st I collected about 500 coppers from just my change (No rolls, ryders, dump banks etc.)I have a scale to weigh the 1982's. All by hand.
Well a friend of mine just broke a coin bank from 1985 and was going to the bank to cash them. I stepped up and said I would buy the pre-1982 pennies! So after sorting the silver (most was clad, but we did find one silver dime) we got about 2800 pennies. All by hand and by looking at the dates. Still about 1600 were in rolls and I have to go through them. Heres the results of the rolls so far: 50 Penny Roll 37 coppers AVG. 13 Zincs AVG. (most 1983-1985) About 74% rate
Theres about 10 wheats so far, 141 canadian (live in michigan so very common?), and 1 darn dime (no foreign coins).
Its going to be a while doing this all by hand and weighing the 82's, but its a nice hobby!
thanks for reading

| Yes your right, a newbie mistake. To rephrase nothing outside North America. Also this haul pales in comparison of your guys 'regular' hauls so forgive me if your expecting something huge, its big to me for a first time. |

Welcome to the board!
I am a scale user as well. You will be amazed at how adept at using it quickly you will become!

This is one of those hobbies that can become a habit/addiction. Before long you'll be right up there with the best of them.

Robarons, Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you got a great group to go through. I like your terminology for the dime.. I just love getting those "darn dimes!"
I was a scale user before getting my Ryedale machine. I found that I was much faster sorting the coppers from the zinc with the scale than I was trying to orient the coin and look at the date with a magnifying glass. You may want to consider doing all your sorting using the scale.
When you fill up the ziplock bag, your next step is to graduate to a kitty litter pail. They can generally be gotten for free from friendly cat owners and they hold a lot of copper. Get the pail that the original product comes fresh in, not the end user tray.
No haul is too small. Sometimes I can only get a roll or 2 from a bank. And your haul is very significant when you consider the percentage of copper. Thanks for sharing with us. Those of us that occasionally have the big hauls are just bigger addicts.. we all share the same hobby and it is great that we can come here to this board and share our experiences with other folks that understand our addiction.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

Welcome to the forum Robarons. Don't make yourself feel like a small time operator with your first copper find, since we all started out small and gradually increased our copper hoardes over time. Great percentages by the way, most on this forum would be thrilled to find one roll with percentages as good as 74%.
I should have chosen "Cut-n-Paste" as a forum name, since that is what I do, mostly. |

I did in one sorting find a few rolls with 96% copper and a few more with a little less than that, but in the big scheme of things, that sort wound up with 33.23% copper. That is one of the only two times i have broken 20%. The other time was around 23% copper.
