Old thread was again getting a bit long. Lets continue with the forums most popular subject. Thanks to all who contribute here, it is a great litmus test, of the percentages out there. It also serves as a "first response" system, if any big time "hoarders" enter the scene, and quickly vacuum out the good ones. Ryedale

Sorted $265 $150 Loose from a lobby redemption machine $100 Brinks box plastic wrapped, and $15 CWR.
Dont have the official percentage yet, but it looks typical, around 30%. The reason I could not concentrate on the percentage, was because the $150 Loose bagged was "RICH" with wheats. Nice obvious collection dump, perhaps over 5 dollars worth, many very shiny coins from the 40's and up. 4 new Indian Heads in this (the best ever day for Indian heads) I'll post the dates later. Up till now, In nearly two years of sorting, I have only found 3 Indians. Many coins from the teens and twenties too, including D and S mintmarks. Nothing too outstanding, but a little better than the common circulating wheats. I have not gone through the whole lot yet, but will give a better report later.

Very new to this, but already enjoying it. Grabbed 4 CWR from my credit union at work the other day to get started on bank-obtained (I have been saving pre-82 from change for a while). Results for the inaugural counting are:
$2.00 Buy 200 Pennies 161 Zinc 38 Copper 1 Canadian (94)
Making 15.5% copper |

I think you did a little better than that penny4mythoughts. I calculate it at 19% copper or 19.5% if you count the copper Canadian. That is about the same percentage as I get in my area.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

I've been doing some buying, but still very little sorting done. Need to finish sorting two Brinks boxes and $50 in CWR. I did however receive a shoe box full of pennies from one of my girlfriends co-workers. I offered to buy the copper ones, she said I could just have the ones I wanted, if I rolled the rest for her. She is another one of those, "They are just pennies" people. I said okay. I started sorting them last night and so far, so good. I need to get busy. "Real" job just takes up too much time. Happy sorting.
Deal
p.s. I'm still waiting (im)patiently for the jugs of pennies.
I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks. |

Snappy,
I've been meaning to ask you what a king is? Is that an old Canadian with a guy on it instead of a girl? I think maybe I have seen like one of those this year. Also congrats on the 1910 S. Those are worth like $5 dollars, right?
The best wheats that I have found are 2 1909s worth like $1.25 each. |

Congrats on the 10-S Snappy. There are guys that look through entire bags of wheat cents and don't find one that good. My best find in a circ roll so far has been a 1912-S in XF. A buddy of mine actually got a 1931-S in AU the other day from some rolls he got at one of his credit unions. So keep your eyes peeled, there are still some good coins out there.
I like the Kings too. I prefer the Old King (George V) to George VI. I actually have a coin book that I collect all the Canadians I have pulled out of circulation in. I don't get very many down here in CA.

a few recent batches
9-17-07 $5.00 74 copper 1 wheat 14.80 percent copper
9-18-07 $74.00 3536 copper 6 wheats 2 Canada 47.78 percent copper
9-19-07 $45.00 650 copper 8 wheats 5 Canada 1 Cayman Islands 14.44 percent copper
I believe that the 9-18 batch must have, in part, been someone's copper hoard. What leads me to believe this is the large percent of copper with a very small amount of foreign or wheats. Also all of the 82's were copper. While I sort I put all of the 82's aside to check later by the flip test. With that batch there were over 400 82's in the batch. After over two hours of sorting 82's via the flip/sound method, they were all copper. Previously I have ran about 75/25. I've also learned that you will appear the strangest to your spouse when asked what you are doing and you respond "flipping 82's". Oh well, all part of the game, and as always,
-More than I had before.

MormonMetal.. Great percentage on that 9/18 batch. Glad to see you finally get a good batch. You have to get a scale to check those 82's.. much more efficient than flipping. This way your wife won't "flip out" when she sees you playing with your pennies. I like to think I am flipping zinc when I haul 12 bags down to the bank and trade them in for 24 fresh boxes of unsorted pennies.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

Sorting analysis Sept 20
$7.50 in cents. CWR (hand-rolled) 0 dimes 1 Wheats 0 Canadian 0 others 18% copper cents 82% zinc cents
I also obtained $27.00 federal-wrapped rolls (white paper rolls) and a brinks box. The details of these will come shortly.
MormonMetal: I thought I was the only one who did the flip test for the 82's. Glad to hear of a another 'flipper'. |

Sorting Report for today: 8 boxes BWR 4046 Copper 1 11 cent piece - OK, it wasn't actually an 11 cent piece, it was a darn dime stuck to a penny. That, plus the 1 free range dime I found in there made 2 darn dimes for the batch. 20.23%
Didn't get much buying done today.. had to go out on a cruise on a yacht for work (Sometimes you just gotta do what ya gotta do to make a buck) <G> Spent a lot of time talking with some bankers on the cruise about coin distribution, ordering and disposal. Having lunch with the Bank President and the manager next week.

my usual Friday $10 sort plus another dollar 303 copper for 27.5 % including 4 wheats , one a 1949 s, rarest penney i have found in sorting yet, though it hardly compares to a 10s , i would never be so lucky. good job snappy. 4 copper canadian 20 1982's. not too bad, but nothing like the 75 or so percent i got last friday at the oxford branch, my first visit there to that branch. i didnt go there today since it is out of my way. oh well, cant hit a vein every week.

9-21-07 Local bank $20.00
40 CWR 521 coppers 8 wheats 21 Canadian, 3 of which are kings
Before I was going to dump my last haul I though of asking for $20 in pennies for a first time, so I could do one large dump. I got a lot of odd looks, but got em'. While my teller getting them out the other said "it looked as it was his collection" and I thought I should took all of them. Also I used to throw the kings back in , but it seems those special so I am keeping those now.

Last week I sorted 6 boxes of pennies and one box of halves. Once again I found 0 silvers in the halves. However, I found a 1982 P No FG which is worth about $5.00. Still not enough to made sorting halves worthwhile. I got one more box of halves to go and then I am done with them.
Also the halves caused me a headache at the credit union. The coin counter counted me 14 halves short...$7.00! I had a long talk with a teller before I left, but she was clueless as to what to do about it. Luckily after I left she called somebody who had her look in a part of the machine that collects trash. Lo and behold...14 halves sitting in the trash area. She called me and all was made well.
So Last week numbers:
6 boxes penny 10,592 zinc returned 4408 coppers kept below average number of wheats (no exact count though) 29.39%
1 box halves 999 returned 1 1982 P No FG kept |

$325 in 2 weeks? There are guys here that can knock off that much in a day. Glad to see you are finally slowing down a little to give me half a chance, but you didn't have to go back to hand sorting.. LOL! I knew you couldn't keep up that frenetic pace forever. Now if I could just get some raw pennies from MI or MN.
