I was just about ready to post the same. It's only a matter of time folks.

"Space says his proposal is aimed at benefiting a company in his district, Jackson Metals, whose president says he would employ 30 people if he were allowed to melt down pre-1982 pennies, which are 95% copper."

Sounds like the good congressman wants to start his own "little" alloy recovery progam in his home town. I can't imagine him winning against the U.S. mint, but this is a good confirmation that penny hoarding will someday not be limited to a few wackos.

Instead of "wackos" I would prefer extremely intelligent, forward thinking, and well prepared.

There is a fine line between the two and unfortunately, the difference can only be seen in hindsight.

Wacko Wabbit here. I think if you were to poll the american public right now the majority would classify us as "wackos." Fortunately, the majority is pretty much always wrong. I am not ready for a melt ban lift yet.. I don't have enough copper hoarded. Heck, if they lift the ban then everybody will be doing it.. what fun will it be then? The longer the ban stays in effect, the better it is for us small time hoarders. A lifting of the ban will mean competition from industrial level sorters that are much better capitalized than us.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

***** for us small time hoarders. *****

HCBTT must be sick and/or delusional this morning. He thinks he is a small time hoarder when he has enough copper already to act as ballast on a war ship. :) Can someone go by and make sure that he is okay? If his house hasn't sunk into the ground from all the copper weight........

I totally agree HCBTT, I want a few more years to build the hoard.
I find it amusing that the lowly penny is on the mind of people in congress. I'm sure his pockets will be greased nicely if this goes through.
Also agree with Ardent, just a matter of time. If this one does not go, all it does is raise awareness, which allows for "positioning" that if it ever does get lifted, the "machine" may be in place to suck them out of circulation very quickly. We'll have to watch this. Well, if it does go through, at least I'm close to Ohio, I wonder if they take "dock" deliveries from individuals. One of those 30 newly employed (probably an imigrant because smelting is a job "no American wants to do" )can unload the trailer.

QUOTE FROM STORY:

Luhrman said he could save taxpayers money by selling the pennies he doesn't melt to banks and currency handling companies in cities with shortages.

Sounds like he will also be doing the separating. But I don't think he will be sending his trucks all over the country dumping zincers at local banks.

This might sound odd with our hobbie but I hope the ban does not get lifted! (just yet) If it is lifted a large company could search millions of dollers each week and wipe the copper out of circulation very fast. I hope the ban stays in affect for a few more years at least. Or until my % drop to the point where I no longer want to search.

Thank you for your concern, Tex. I am fine here. That little shaker the other night didn't affect me at all.. didn't even knock over any bags or boxes of pennies. All that copper ballast is to hold the house down when the "Big One" hits.

Sure I'm a small time hoarder.. only sorted 5 boxes last night.

We need more time....

Deal

I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks.

Great point, Rydale. These things move either very slowly or very, very fast.

And like many on this board, I wish I had more time to build up my hoard.

I have always assumed a short time horizon. Guess I will just have to step it up another notch, or at least start stockpiling unsorted boxes.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

LOL.. no matter what level we are at, we can always step it up a little. Zinc disposal is a bitch though.

I agree with most of you. We need more time before any ban is lifted.

Prior to the melting ban I know of a least one company that was sorting and melting in what I consider a huge way. Such companies could have made a lot larger dent in pulling out copper pennies then all of us together ever could. Though I admit it appears some of you come close. As strange as this may sound, the melting ban may have been a blessing for us.

I wonder if 'Jackson Metals' was sorting and melting prior to the ban?

Some of us make our wee bit of effort at "preserving" the coinage. I agree that the ban really benefitted most of us.. though I was originally really upset me to the point of seeing yellowed that it messed up a 2 ton deal I had working with a metals dealer. I originally found this site through searches on the legality of melting copper back in the days when it was legal.. I just couldn't find enough proof in print to convince my metals dealer.

The way I read the article, Jackson Metals was in the business of melting prior to the ban. I think also that they are currently are sorting and selling the copper to collectors. Of course they would like to step it up a little and make more money.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

I just wonder if the melt ban is lifted, and cents end up in the smelter, will in the near future the numismatic crowd refer to common copper cents as "junk copper" the way they refer to junk siver today? The same thing happened to common silver coins in the 60's, maybe the cents that escape the smelter will develop a collectable price like the indian head cent has today.

Probably not. There were a whole lot less Indian pennies minted.

I'm sure the price would go up in the short term (six months) and the long term (ten years or more) It is just that loooong middle period I would be concerned about!

It isn't too far off till copper will start to rise. I think the copper cents will get a premium very fast as did silver coinage, and just like silver coins so many will be lost in melting that the coin collectors will start to see once common cents disappear.
