Just saw the episode with the woman with the 1914 $20 Star Note. God, what a ****. "I know my note is worth $300......wait, make it $1,000 after that guy said it was $1,000!!!"
Rick, tell your "Experts" to lowball the quotes!! Or for that matter, add maybe "Auction Setting" or "Retail Setting" or something similar just so that you can tell the person "The price he said was for an AUCTION SETTING and i'm not an auction house." Make them learn the true cost of selling things when the auction houses tack on commission and FVF and buyers premium.
And is it just me, or do some of these folks just plain infused with illusions of grandeur thinking they might find an enormous payday and scoff when Rick gives them the hard truth? I wanted to punch some of them (Namely the Louis Vuitton Guy and the WWI Trench Knife Guy).

I absolutely love this show. I think it is extremely interesting and addicting. I watch it every time it is on, no matter if I've seen the episode before.

I enjoy the show. People think just because what they have might bring a certain amount at auction, they think they can get that at the pawn shop. Rick does lowball them, but they are free to walk out the door and try their luck on E-Bay or somewhere else.
Chumlee is the best. I like the "Old Mans" attitude. |

I've been seeing it advertised in Canada. Starts soon.
I actually visited the shop in Vegas in mid Dec. They had a mixed bag of silver and gold, junk silver etc. in one display case and a number of old gold coins set in rings in another. The marked prices were way to high at $15 for a circulated Franklin, $30 for circulated SAEs, gold coins at $1600 for 1/2 ounce and so on. I asked the clerk if they sold at "spot plus" and he just laughed at me, said they had to make money, and walked off. Gee, I thought they would be satisfied with just paying people low ball prices on the precious metals. I guess they sell some stuff to ignorant people, but it seems like a better plan to be reasonably competitive. At fair prices I might have dropped a couple grand there but oh well, Pawn Stars suck.

Love the show. I'm planning a Vegas trip and will probably swing by to check it out. I don't think the lowballs are that horribly bad.
I like the fact he brings in the experts to give their takes on what they have. I think its pretty fair to deal with it that way. I bet more often than not he could really put the screws to someone who has no idea what they have and get it off them for cheap.
$15 franklins means I probably won't be buying anything! Wonder if they have them priced that way because they aren't seen often and can fleece the unsuspecting tourist? Wonder what they price generic rounds at?
Either way, like the show - got a couple new ones on the DVR I haven't watched yet. |

All the bullion was 2X to 5X reasonable values. If your going, why not have some fun and try to buy. Take a print out of Apmex site for some generic rounds, ASE and a few gold pieces. I could not believe how unreasonable the prices are. They never hear of eBay as a place to see what stuff sells for? |

I watch this show all the time. My favorite one was when that guy brought in a old flintlock and it turned out to be fake. He tried to remain calm but freaked out and started yelling and cursing once he got outside. Haha, I'm surprised more people don't react like that. |

I too have watched every episode. The Old Man cracks me up every time he opens his mouth. I just would not be able to take him seriously in person. My fav was also the guy with the fake flintlock. Bleep bleep bleeeeep!
I have been to several pawn shops in Reno, as well as coin shops there. The pawn shops never offer competitive prices, and the coin shops were always willing to haggle off the graysheet and do spot+ for junk coins. No contest. Always choose a reputable coin dealer and you'll fare much better.
Rick is very predictable in his haggling skills...that's been useful to study and it's a good life skill. Your knowledge about the item and about the other person will always give you the upper hand in a negotiation. I think the show is great. |

Hey, I just checked and the full episodes are available streaming online at The History Channel website! Which is awesome, because we don't have the good cable. |

Forget the pawn shops in Vegas, any shop in CA is better! For very real prices look in the pawn shops at Sparks (next to Reno) when in NV. |

Just watched the two most recent episodes.
I don't know.... anybody have good knowledge of the profit end of coin shops or pawn shops?
Seems they took advantage of a guy with the War Bonds posters.
Are they really taking advantage? or is that the cost of selling things to a re-seller? I.E. are they honest money makers or are they crooks?
To me it seems an honest money maker would always give the seller the best price he could, even if the guy had no idea what it was worth. |

I think I have seen every episode, but the one you mentioned, and haven't felt they were taking advantage of anyone. Nobody is forcing them to sell, and they have every right to walk. They cannot give them anywhere close to retail for the items they buy. Most of the items shown on the episodes are rare, valuable, and expensive. They are not a normal retail store and some of this stuff may sit on their shelves for quite a while. They are all about turning over inventory, anything that sits is costing them money.
I think they are very fair in bringing in experts to authenticate the items and give them an approximate value. Rick is pretty upfront saying he can't pay retail because he has to resell it for a profit.
The margins as they appear are not nearly that great in reality.
Walmart buys the junk they sell for 50 cents on the dollar or less too, when they get done cooking the books their margins are very slim on the retail side, probably a couple percent. Nobody complains to Walmart that they are taking advantage of the manufacturer they are buying from. Quite the opposite.
I'm not a pawnbroker (I do know a couple), but I've sold thousands of things on ebay and each item purchased is a risk, there is no guarantee that what you just bought is gonna bring what you think it should. Buy low/Sell high. On a side note, I know a guy who owns a sports card shop who used to make an absolute killing selling cards on ebay several years ago. He'd buy cards from customers knowing he had a wider market on ebay. Now he does the opposite, he BUYS on ebay to resell to customers in his store. Many categories on ebay have turned this way.
I think most people think they are screwing their customers, because they are usually in a tough spot and need the cash. They do provide a service and it is valuable to many people who need it. If they don't want to sell it, just pawn it and come back and get it.
Payday loans are another story. I go around and around with the couple pawnbrokers I know about those scams. |

My wife really likes the show, and I pick some of it up through osmosis.
The only thing I'd like to see different is to show them actually selling some of the merchandise they buy. |

I get enough entertainment from pennies, nickels, and silver coins. TV sucks people in and I can't stand to sit through commercials. |

Yes, but I still don't think TV is all that much worth it. You don't gain anything from it, and you could be doing much more rewarding, fun, and exciting things than sitting and watching TV. |

you can actually learn things on the computer, country bumpkin, and ask questions to others in forums like these. Other than this site and a few other sites, I do other things than the computer. |
