Poll Question:
How many of you spend the time searching through your copper for wheaties? Is it worth it searching through all of your coppers for wheaties? I mean how do you even cash them out? Will the coin store make a fair offer on them or do you have to post them on feebay? I see most of the wheaties posted have no bids.

| I do, mainly for peace of mind though. I know it is only going to turn up a few wheats each time, but it drives me nuts to have unsearched coin sitting there that could hold something valuable in it. |

| It appears that the going rate for copper is 1.5 cents and for wheats is about 4 cents. So they are worth more but if you found 1 a minute that is only an extra profit of 1.5 dollars an hour...no where close to minimum wage. If you have fun doing it...there are not a lot of hobbies that you can do and make money at the same time...you have to pay to golf! |

I'm a hand sorter so I put all wheaties aside as I go, actually the reason I search is for Wheaties, Indians, foreign coins and errors and copper is more of a by-product for me.
Anybody looking to buy some coppers cheap? let me know, I have about 10 $25 boxes that I need to move out to free up my search money.

Did you mean penny sorting in general, or when you look for the wheats?  I don't know that many people that do this and earn more than $10/hour. I don't believe i do.

I hand sort/search my rolls of coins. So, finding any wheats, errors/varieties, foreign coins, key dates, the kids' birth years...THAT'S what this is all about for me.
A huge treasure hunt filled with great expectations every time I open a new roll and begin the hunt as I search obverse and reverse of each and every coin in the roll hoping to find some treasure that I will want to keep.

I don't have a Ryedale anymore, but when I did, I sorted as much of my copper as I could.....
I too couldn't stand the thought of wheaties just sitting there.. All alone, with no one to love them.... |

It depends on your level of sorting. If you have a Ryedale and a thousand dollars you're better off churning copper and not taking the time to look for wheaties. If your budget is limited, then you want to take the time to examine every coin. I do like Hoard suggested on another post, just save the all the coppers unsorted, there will be plenty of time to pull wheaties when the Memorials are gone. They'll have at least doubled in price by then, too.  |

I pluck the wheats out if I have free time and my daughter wants to help. She enjoys it, we spend quality time together, and the bucket seems to empty faster. I have sent many 68lb lots out unsearched. The customers like it, and it helps insure repeat business.
The time/ profit ratio is low. With all my other obligations, I find it hard to find the time. But I always wonder what treasure I might be sending out. |

| I said no, but I do pull as many as I can when the Ryedale is running. I used to take extra time to look at every copper coming out of the Ryedale, but gave that up about 6 months ago. |

Sometimes, if I see a lot of them or if I have a bag that I know is wheat heavy, I'll actually skim through them as they exit the Ryedale. But, 9 times out of 10 I don't search for anything. Still in with the coppers.
Do I make money off this? Nope. Do I care? Nope. Instant profit was never my major factor for me. That being said, I do like money. Even paper money....

| Since I had sort I always look for wheats. That is how I found a 1909S VDB earlier this year. The coin dealer I sold it to said he had never found one in circulation. |

Hmmmm, about 5 cents each if you can sell them in a sealed bank bag:

Takes time to find wheaties, but being able to sell them even a few times face for circulated common date ones is money found I guess. Notice the seller made no comment about the bag being unsearched. |

Hi there-
I absolutely sort for wheats. Love them.
I don't think any of us are doing this for a LIVING, so trying to rationalize the profit margin/vs time spent is not really my goal.
All I know is, I can spend $500 on boxes of pennies, and get $100-$150 profit in coppers and wheats. I sort while watching tv, so the time spent is a non-issue. Free money. F-R-E-E money.

| For hand sorters like me, it makes no sense (cents) not to sort out the wheats. I have a local coin shop that buys them for 3 cents apiece. I haven't sold any yet, but some time soon I might start to sell some with dates from the 50's and keep the older ones. Once the metal composition of the penny is switched to steel, I think all copper pennies will become more sought after, especially wheats. Finding wheats is one of the things that keeps me stoked to keep sorting. |

I started hand sorting this year and so far have found close to a full roll of wheats. the oldest being a 1917, It really makes it alot funner as I sort while watching tv.
I also cherry pick any mint errors, double dies and 1970 small dates etc, which i have already found over 400 of. I also save the 1959s separate as I believe these will have numismatic value in 10-15 years when everything is dryed up.
I have a 1977 double die that I am going to send to be graded as its not listed in any of the books I have. |
