PERU half sol, brass.. and a nineteenth century 2 centavo (below). I have a friend who is a llama farmer. She says these are not actually llamas... although they are in the same family They are in fact called a VICUNA. This design was used from 1966-75.

The 2 centavo was made from copper-nickel in 1863-4, then was made from copper or bronze 1876-79 and 1895. A very similar design was resumed in 1917. Planchet thickness was reduced in 1941, and in 1950 the denomination was changed to zinc and reduced in size. Enjoy.

SWAZILAND cent.

There are a lot of world coin issues that have two reverses - a "normal" one, and an "F.A.O." reverse. This is one of those F.A.O. coins.
Stolen from the internet: The Food and Agriculture Organization exists to "modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices and ensure good nutrition for all". In 1968, they started a Money and Medals program to help spread their message of the urgent need to increase food and agricultural production. They encourage governments to use their coinage to promote this important message. In excess of 18 million dollars have been shared by participating countries and used directly in the development of agriculture. FAO website: You must be logged in to see this link.

WOOHOO, four gold coins in the junk bin for less than a dollar total!!!
...I wish.

SWITZERLAND 2 rappen. Is that wheat, too? This is another of the countries that you just have to know: Helvetia on a coin is going to mean it is from Switzerland. Gotta go!

We've surpassed the 70 country mark!
I have maybe 10 more countries to add before I "run out."
Do you think we could reach 100?
Bluegill has been a big help... who else has some stuff to show?

Looks like it. I didn't realize how many coins have wheat stalks on them until this thread got started.

DENMARK again
Bluegill had posted some 1964-72 five ore back on page 5, but I recently got one that predates them a bit. The 1, 2, and 5 ore were bronze throughout the 20th century, although there were years of iron, aluminum, and zinc examples tucked in there along the way. The holed type was made from 1926-40, and the examples shown by Bluegill were used from 1960-72.

8000 views!
Although much of what is on this thread is from the last year, I've been a "budget" world coin collector for many years. I have looked through a lot of junk bins, boxes, binders, placed online orders through email and eBay, and even had some generous people in this group help by sending me stuff. I've always liked the look of copper in its various forms (pure, bronze, brass, etc...). So I found an inexpensive way to build a collection that I enjoy looking at, I figured it's something maybe others would like to look at too. I think there have been some people enjoying this thread along the way... and I hope there are at least a few out there still enjoying it! Regardless, I still very much enjoy doing this. Here's hoping we get to ten thousand views and 100 countries!!!

SPAIN. Couple very different eras. Well, 3 actually...

Above are a couple examples of 19th century Spanish coins. The one on the right is a base metal copy of a 10 escudos gold coin. Anyone know more about that?
Below are a couple more recent examples. 100 pesetas, and a copper-plated euro cent, which I just snuck in there for fun.

Got some more MEXICO this week... some beautiful stuff, I think! This will be going over to my Grandpa's collection soon, but I wanted to get a good scan of 'em first.

The fifty centavo was this type from 1955-59. Twenty centavo for 1920 and 1935 only. Both good coins to find, especially the 1920. Couldn't find a ten centavo to add to this denomination set, but they were big ones (like the 20c shown) from 1919-21 and 1935 as well. All nice to find. Five centavo was this type from 1914-35, two centavo from 1905-41, and one centavo from 1905-49.

Bronze again: The 20 centavo went back to bronze in 1943 (the popular half-dollar-sized "pyramid and mountains" design) until 1974. The ten centavo was bronze again, although smaller (approx quarter size) for 6 years between 1955 and 1967. The five centavo went back to bronze (quarter size) from 1942-55, and a smaller brass coin (nickel size) from 1954-69 which was shrunk again (penny size) for 1970-76. The one centavo became a small brass (dime size) coin in 1950, and was shrunk further (to 13mm) for 1970-73. LOTS of composition and size changes over the last hundred years!!!
