I have been in this forum a handful of times and read some interesting posts. I started sorting back in 1978. Sorting for wheats was the primary reason. The coin hobby was still strong back then and there were many doing the same thing. Anyway, the only real reason I did it then and I still do it now is because of the preservation of coinage. I was very young then, but remember an earlier time (early 1970s) where I would visit Grandpa's house and go to my hideout behind my Grandma's Vanity dresser. I would map out where I found treasure and collect my goods in a box. This treasure was pennies - all of them - wheats, memorials, and an occassional indian. This box of pennies stayed behind my grandmas vanity for years - she never moved or cleaned behind it! I found the box still existed 15 years after I put them there (1974-1988/89)! This was a decade after I started coin hobby. To this day I swear up and down that my grandparents scattered pennies throughout the house on purpose because they knew what I was doing. I had completely forgot what happened to that box until the day my mother found it, but I knew why my hobby was coins... especially pennies.
