Poll Question:
I always check certain dates for varieties, and I have some luck finding them.

I check the following dates.

1972 (Double die varieties)
1983 (Double die on reverse)
1984 (Double die on obverse)
1992-D (Close AM on reverse)
1995 (Double die on obverse)
1998 (Wide AM on reverse)
1999 (Wide AM on reverse)
2000 (Wide AM on reverse)

So far I have found about 6 1972 minor double dies, 4 1995 double dies, 4 1998 Wide AM and 3 2000 Wide AM. I have only started looking for the Wide AM coins in the past few weeks.

I have sold three of the 1995 double dies, and got between $20.00 and $35.00. I currently have the fourth one on eBay, and it is already at $15.00. It still has a few days before it ends.

Do you bother looking?

Choices:

Yes, it is worth the effort
No, it is a waste of time
No, but I will start looking

I check. My penny sorting is double good to me I pull all errors sell them to a coin dealer or trade for silver, depending on price I get then hoard all my coppers. Nothing like using copper to buy silver.

Do you look for the 1970 S small date? Ive been sorting these out of my coppers in the hopes that one day I'll find the time to search for the small date. I am so far behind on sorting pennies right now since I started doing $600 of nickels a week.

Do you also pull the 1969 S in the hopes its one of the rare double die? Ive been putting those in a separate baggie with the 1970 S. I know its probably a very long shot but I figure its worth a chance. That is actually how I found my 1969 S brockage error that turned out to be worth $12.

I only consider it a mint error if it is obvious. A good error coin makes you arch an eyebrow the minute you see the coin and ask "How the heck did this makes it past the quality control inspectors".

If I have to squint and magnify to even notice the "variety", then it's best explained by margin of error on manufacturing tolerances. Let's face it, the Mint's machines aren't 100% accurate 100% of the time.

I keep all 1968-1974-S in a separate container. I do check 1969 and 1970, but have not found the good ones. I have a few 1969-S with doubling on the date and mint mark, but it is "machine doubling", and are not considered to be valuable.

I forgot to add 1992 to the list. There is a close AM variety that is pretty rare.

Right now I have only been checking the 1972's. I set them aside to check later. I have also thought of rolling them up and selling them on ebay. I only quick check the date while hand sorting for copper and do not take a magnifing glass to them. But that might be a hard sell on ebay for "unsearched" 1972 cents.

I check the 1972 for var. also.
I just found this morning a 72 that has the "r" in trust missing.
No mention of it in the cherrypickers guide.
Guess its just a die break, but interesting none the less.

I just let the Ryedale do the work. I don't look at the Zincs. They go straight back to the bank.

I don't look through the zincs anymore for errors. But i will look and any known "S" mint or wheat that has error or varieties. And if i find BU coins for similar years i'll see if they are an error or variety. Otherwise i wouldn't go out of my way at the moment to find them. It's a lot of work to sort the coins by date then check each one for the variety or error.

Selling Copper cents. $0 FV available at 1.4xFV. Also interested in trading for wheat pennies and other coins Please pm me for requests or inquiries.

Absolutely, I take the time to look!!! Now that being said, with my poor vision, I am certain that I am over"looking" many of the doubling errors. I know for sure that I can not see the RPMs on the coins. Even when one is pointed out to me, I have difficulty seeing it.

But there are enough things that I can see that make it worth my while to hand sort and look at every coin and keeps the excitement in this hobby for me.

Copperhead57...I believe if you will do a little more research, you will find that the 1983 has errors on both obverse and reverse.

There is an error involving the "G" on the reverse of the 1988 but I absolutely can NOT see the FG well enough to tell.

Enjoy your searches, everyone.

I am well aware of other varieties, but most of them are not widely collected. Therefore, I only concentrate on the more popular varieties.
