I have a friend who goes shooting quite often. She will often save me her brass and I turn it in for recycling.

I was looking at an online auction and they were selling spent casings for reloading. It was about 500 rounds and the bid was up to $15.

Is there much of a market for this? Should I be saving them to sell for reloading vs turning in for scrap?

Yes there is a market for spent brass for reloading.

But would depend on the caliber.

.22 and .25 - no

.32 to .50 cal. - yes

Try posting a ad at a local shooting range and gun shop.

Besides, you can always scrap them latter if need be...

I just sold 179 Winchestor and Federal 270 shells for $0.20 each to a local reloader. He paid me $35.80 for what would have fetched $4.00 at my scrap yard. It takes longer to find someone who wants them but when you do they pay a lot more.

No, most reloaders will clean them themselves. Try a gunshop flyer or craigslist.

wow, that is a lot for those 179 and 270 shells!! How much are they new from the store? Must be $1 apiece! ??

Yeah, I'm saving up some shells. I'm sorting them for future bartering or sell.

Once fired brass shell casing are worth way more than scrap value. Military Surplus brass shell casings are often Berdan primed (multiple primer holes) and very difficult to reload. Berdan primed cases are common on European ammunition and these are usually sold as scrap brass. Boxer primed brass (single primer holes) are sold to reloaders at a premium. NOTE: the primers often have steel in them and the scrap dealers will discount the price if the primers are IN vs primers REMOVED. It's not worth the time and effort to remove berdan primers yourself as this is very time consuming.

There are also steel shell casings with a coating on them, aluminum cased pistol ammo and chromium coated brass cases. Stick to the yellow stuff and you'll be fine. The rest is junk unless you have a huge quantity to recycle as in a gun club or shooting range.

Don't scrap the brass if it is centerfire. You should be able to find a buyer. Rimfire rounds can go to the scrapper as they are not reloaded.

Brass cases are never "chromium plated" but they are sometimes nickel plated.

While I haven't invested in reloading equipment (yet) I've been saving all of my 5.56 brass for the last 2 years. I've amassed quite the hoard :) Like Deal mentioned, any centerfire brass is worth saving and selling to a reloader or fellow shooter.

I have, and have yet to reload a single round. I'm slacking for sure. I have everything to reload several calibers, I just haven't. Keep saving that brass man.
