I don't want to offend anyone - I feel sorry for anyone that has to go on unemployment. My son has been on it for the last 3 months. There is less and less incentive for him to find work, since the government is providing for him. He has decided to not even look for work, and I think he could find a job.
Yep, happening all over. I personally know several people on unemployment who I know could find jobs. One has been on unemployment for over a year, the other pushing a year. No motivation to look. They can make more money sitting at home than working for a lower wage and contributing something. Easy paycheck every week just sitting. Easy money. With all the extensions the government keeps providing, I wonder if I needed unemployment all the sudden, do I have more than a year to sit back and watch the suckers work? I doubt it....
I don't want this to come across as talking down to all people on unemployment, some really need it and don't want it. They want to work. I feel sorry for them. The lazy mooches on the other hand, I don't think so.

| That is why these minimum wage machines should be implemented. There should be no such thing as a free handout. You want money, you work for it. This country needs a mentality change. |

| Well, I am unemployed at the moment. In April my dealership shut down. I did try other parts departments for employment but with the struggling economy these places were either full or ready to drop a few people themselves. I have been in the process of becoming a corrections officer, which takes a while if anyone knows how quickly the government works. While collecting my meager $275 a week from unemployment I have decided, that since there is no job out there for me to make more from while waiting for the city to call me and tell me to go to the police acadamy, I will take this time to work out and get my body and metabolism right so when I do get into this job I don't fail do to being a fat lazy slob on unemployment. The next acadamy is in January, and yes once I start the acadamy I will be earning a real paycheck. To be honest, being on unemployment is a humbling experience. One could go through a time of very deep Depression and have no self esteem, feeling he/she is not pulling their own weight for their family making you feel like complete crap. I know I have gone through a lot of different emotions since April. It SUCKS....... I do not take offense to anyone's opinions on those of us on unemployment, you all have the right to express your feelings on the subject. I just wanted to let you know how it is for SOME but not all of us on the other side. |

Sanitarium Inmate, I think the comments are directed towards the ones who are not even looking or try, and don't care. You on the other have a plan. As long as some people continue to get extensions and free handouts, they will continue to do so.
While you are not working at a paying job you could work on those projects around the house. Fix all those things you have been meaning to get to. Work in the yard.
You could also take part of the money and hunt change with it. I think I wound up with a little over $500 in halves yesterday from the 40 banks I went to. I did manage to find 40 40% halves. I could sell for a $80 profit. It is hit and miss and I did use gas. But this would get you out of the house and give you a task for the day. Idol minds are not good. If you are busy either doing projects, or running errands or keeping the house tidy, these are big contributions to the family.
I am out on Family leave to help my mom and brother. I think that I have been able to make more money selling pennies and other coins than I would have made working. ( not really but enough to live on). I also was able to sell some junk we had in storage and packed away on E-Bay.
The free handouts are stupid. Put these people to work cutting grass on government properties. Local and Federal. Pay them minimum wage, or whatever their unemployment check is. Let them pickup trash along the highway. Find something for them to do to earn their check instead of sitting and waiting on the mail man. |

| SANITARIUM INMATE, my comments certainly wern't addressed to those who are willing to work. You have been a victim of this current administration and their socialistic policies. There will be a lot more victims if this healthcare bill passes. |

| INMATE, I am sorry that you are going through tough times. My comments are certainly not geared towards you. I do appreciate your situation and that you have a plan in place. However, I will continue to have a negative opinion when it comes to most government subsidies. I am against entitlements. Clearly you are not using your unemployment checks as entitlement, but others clearly are. I get really (upset - censored) at the grocery store when I have to stand and wait in line for 20 minutes while someone's items are traded out for others to match the approved items on the food stamp list, etc, etc, only for her to then drop a C-note to buy a 60-pound bag of dog chow while talking to her sister on her iPhone. The message here is not so much that all unemployment should be eliminated, but that there should be some expectation of service provided for the check. I agree that mindlessly turning a crank would be demeaning and unnecessarily punitive, but perhaps persons collecting unemployment should be performing some task. I like the idea of mowing lawns, shoveling snow, helping old ladies across the street, or some other contribution to society. At least such measures would start to weed out the free-loaders. Take one of my relatives, for instance - an actor earning a 6-figure income, collecting unemployment between films simply because the law allows it and "everyone else is doing it." Could he afford to live without it, absolutely. Did he feel entitled to it, absolutely. He feels he is overtaxed, so this is his way of sticking it to the man. I explained that he was actually sticking it to me. I bet he would not have taken that money if he had to sweep for it. |

| I bet that "artist" would have a heart attack if he found out that someone like me existed - someone who was actually in favor of entirely abolishing the minimum wage (or rather, gradually reducing it until it was completely gone). :D |

I completely disagree, Let me explain why.
There is something very very fundamentally wrong with the government being the nations largest employer. By your theory, the fed could crash the system and every one could be made to do those "something for them to do" jobs. Your place in the gov owned factory line? Your place on the highway pick up crew? Your test scores say you did very well and fall in line with the governments views, your place is as a suporvisor.
I agree with the handouts are stupid, but I get the feeling that keeping the number of unemployed on benefits fills a gap of somekind to keep the gov borrowing from the fed at the fastest rate possible. Our gov does not care about us. If they didn't want the money flowing to that "allocation" they would simply cut it off and let the chips land where they may, be it you become a entrapenure millionare or starve, as I said, they don't care.
It is natural that weak people fall prey to human nature as it requires great discipline to overcome the perils associated with "free money". Over a period of time such as some people being on it up to 2 years i believe, the apathy that sets in coupled with the emotional and phsychological stress from the position as Sanitorium explained it has now ruined many many people in this country after being in such a position for an extended time as this. And I believe this too is by design.
I agree too that the min wage laws should be abolished and the free market allowed to set the wage where it may. Perhaps then we may see innovation again. |

Kurr, I understand that it wouldn't work, but I hate driving by houses where I see people just sitting on the porch waiting on the mailman.
One of my neighbors tried to get some of the youth that were unemployed and working the streets to help him with landscaping and light construction work. They didn't want to do it.
If I didn't have a job, my job would be looking for a job. Even doing landscaping and doing grunt work for a construction jobs can pay off. This gives you a chance to network. You don't know who's grass you are cutting or who's house you are working on. It might be a plant manager or a CEO that will give you a job because he has seen your hard work at his home.
The free handout makes some people lazy. |
