You must be logged in to see this link.

quote:
The minimum wage machine allows anybody to work for minimum wage. Turning the crank will yield one penny every 5.04 seconds, for $7.15 an hour (NY state minimum wage). If the participant stops turning the crank, they stop receiving money

Of course, by the time you sort out the coppers from the zincs, you'll be making less than minimum wage.

humm, interesting. I'm a bit confused here, are they giving away free money for turning their machine or they just let you use it? Hummm

But if it pays in copper cents you would get twice as much in value.

I like...

You only get out of it, what effort you put in it.

Which compared to "I deserve something for nothing",

is a radical idea these days...

Hmmm, I would just hook up a small motor to turn the crank for me. Ingenuity, not laziness ;)Finally get to play El jefe and reap the returns.

And if we hooked several thousand of these up to dynamos would that be considered "green jobs building the new energy infrastructure"?

People are so lazy that they wouldn't even try to make minimum wage doing this. These are the same people who would never find a hundred dollar bill if you put it under a job application.

People would never turn this crank. There are too many free, government handouts available.

Just my two cents!

Correct. Easier to sit at home in a baby making factory and collect the check every month. After all, every kid is a raise in pay....

Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

I propose these be set-up at every city hall, based on some ratio of machines to census population. All welfare and government handouts/subsidies are eliminated. There are no restrictions on who can turn the machine or for how long. You need money, you crank. I would be happy to fund this with my tax dollars. At least I could see where it is going, and there would be the entertainment value. HCBTT and slickeast would be there with Ryedale ACEs at their sides, dropping pennies to sort.

Just my two cents!

"Free" money coming from "somewhere" being put in container "account" so someone in "the public" with no skill can have meaningless "work" to reap a steady stream, of the least that could have been chosen for them (plated cents vs GAE's) without really having even enough of a wage (the stream) to replace the energy they spend turning the crank and replacement and medical treatment they will need for the reptitive motion/carpel tunnel they will get, let alone live well from and save.

In that machine I see a microcosm of government planning.

Will this be restricted to legal US residents or will illegal aliens get to crank all the machines?

Hey, I think this cranks out more pennies than sorting them and trying to sell off the copper!

Illegals will get a gear reduction so it is .01 every 10 secs. Till they make enough to pay for bus fare home.

Edit: Have illegals turn cranks that are connected to wind/wind (HA, pronounciation play.. 2 points) turbines that create electric that can be sold and split between funding the penny machine and the bus ticket to repatriate them. Immigration and unemployment solved. Everybody wins. Next!!

I wanted to use it as a source for pennies rather than a dump. Just crank out a few bags.. take them home.. and sort out the copper!

HCBTT might show up after Ant leaves. Then he will go home with a bag full of zincs. I guess $7.15 an hour is better than nothing.

There is 24 hours in a day. Put a motor on that sucker and make 171.60 a day or 1201.20 a week.

It didn't look like it held very many. You would run it dry in no time. Then you would have to pay somebody 5 or 6 times minimum wage to do the refills.

Since it is "art" and, I suspect, social commentary, your impressions are probably what the artist intended.

quite the social experiment, forget art piece!

As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

How about this interpretation:

No matter how hard you work or whether you do the very least possible, it still pays the same. Some people work their butts off, and get paid the same as the guy next to them who slacks off all day.

I would also be curious to know - what's the longest someone has actually stayed there cranking that thing? Which would lead me to think: Sometimes, no matter how much you get paid, if the job seems pointless, or if it's terribly repetitive, people won't do it long.

But this is awfully clever. I would love to have one. I would gladly fill it up with my zincs and when people came over to the house I would let 'em crank on it. Amazing conversation piece.

Since I retired I guess you could say I am a minimum wage penny machine. Heck I just have too much time on my hands. I might as well be sorting pennies.

It could be an unemployment machine. Make people filing for unemployment to crank it for their unemployment pay. Would be an incentive to get off unemployment pretty quickly.

I don't want to offend anyone - I feel sorry for anyone that has to go on unemployment. My son has been on it for the last 3 months. There is less and less incentive for him to find work, since the government is providing for him. He has decided to not even look for work, and I think he could find a job.
