Hi Everyone -

I was walking my dog last night in the dark & as I went by one house there was a small box with some scrap metal. I looked inside & grabbed a brand new hammer head with broken shaft & a newer style metal cigarette case Export A - nice for small parts storage. I gave the rest a quick look & just see some crappy stainless forks & spoons.

So, I am thinking about the box will I'm walking my dog & decide that I'll go back & grab later tonight it when I p/u my son from his work. Just for the stainless steel.

The next day - today - I am going through the stuff & theres some stainless spoons & stuff, an older florescent desk lamp - no bulb, a neat magnet for holding tools & a round tin of stuff. The magnet got screwed to the garage door frame right away - great for sorting scrap. Inside the tin theres 3 older lapel pins, an older make up compact in mother of pearl & brass with mirror & powder still in it - very art deco, a copper cap thing from a latern that held the wick, 2 shiney chrome plated shell casings .270 & a .308 & 2 small round cup things. One of them says Birks & sterling on the bottem. The other has brass inside it & a lion. They have a few dings & are black & dirty looking.

I double check this on fleebay & find out that its from Birks Jewelers for a wedding ring box from the 1950-3. No ring though. A mint one sold for $212.00 US. Ebay item # 360197364332. I had to go back into the garage & fish out the copper part. Its covered in velvet & actually holds the ring. I had chucked it into my scrap copper bin!

I'm going to start carrying a flashlight with me & look a lot closer at stuff being left out at the curb!!

Happy hunting all!!

Nice. Yes. Very nice.

Sweet. Amazing what people throw away. It's not only that they don't know what they are throwing out, but it's that they don't care. Nice finds. Making money on trash, sounds good to me....

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Speaking of NOT KNOWING WHAT THEY ARE THROWING AWAY, several years ago I found a $500. US savings bond in a discarded jewelry box. We built a wood burning stove out of an old hot water heater and would go to a dump ground for yard waste (grass, limbs, trees etc.)to get wood for our stove.
One day my small daughter noticed a number of really nice jewelry boxes in a bag. She wanted to take them home to play with. They were very clean so we let her take them home. She opened each one hoping to find a surprise but no jewelry was found. However, in one box underneath the holder of a bracelet, I assume, was the Saving Bond and a note from someones husband. It was quite old and had already matured but looked like it had just been purchased. After looking more closely at the name on the bond, I discovered the owner of the bond was a bowler on the league I bowled on. Boy was she surprised! She never knew it was in that box and her husband never mentioned it. They both were shocked they got back something they both didn't know they tossed. Quite a thing to throw away.
