So I'm prepping some silver scrap to go out tomorrow to a refinery. Mostly scrap jewelry but I had two candlesticks that I bought for a total of $6. I was proud of this buy as they weighed in at a little over 12 oz troy . Tonight I banged them out with a hammer to get the weighted material out. The resulting clean scrap- about 1.4 oz . The silver is paper thin...

I still came out ahead but...
The lesson learned: Don't pay too much for silver candlesticks!

You could've cleaned them up, and probably gotten more.

Yep, most candlesticks are weighted with a heavy plaster inside.

They were really beaten up to begin with. This was the first time I cleaned one out and I knew about the weighted material. I thought it was just a ring of plaster to give it extra weight. Didn't realize the plaster is essentially the entire thing!

Butter knfe handles are often the same way.

I had a candle stick too. Was filled with a type of clay, and the top was held to the base by a nail.

So do you send your scrap silver to a refiner directly? How do you set that up? I've been selling mine to a coin store for 31.5 cents a gram.

midwest refineries will pay 90% for silver but will not take knives that have any stainless or any flatware with filled handles - you have to do the work before you send to them.

Buying:
Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00
copper cents at 1.3X
wheat pennies at 3X

How much do you get per gram? Once you pay for shipping, is it better going to a coin store or to mail it to a refinery

I'd also like to ask about taxes when selling to midwest. Would your check be considered taxable income? Or do you get refined product in return?

A friend of mine who has taken many of the weighted candlesticks apart has told me that there is about 3/4 oz in each of the smaller (approx. 3") size ones and about 1 1/2 oz in each of the larger (approx 6") ones. Your 1.4 oz is pretty consistent with what he told me.

So do you have to pay to ship it to him?

Yea, but with flat rate boxes it's minimal.

I made the same discovery about candlesticks about a year ago. I was really bummed when I realized that the weighting was mostly silver. I should've tried to resell them instead of scrapping them for almost nothing.

Very, very grateful to you all!!! I did not know that there was so little silver in a candle stick. I have been fortunate to run across a few with no weighting in them. This info will help me a lot. There is a guide on Ebay that advised you to not bid until you read what they have to say. I believe it is a gal that wrote it. She says that she has taken apart everything and has the weights for them all. She also educates you about "German" silver and other "silvers" that really are nothing of the kind. So, I guess buying that is a good start.

Thank you for sharing your expertise. I love collecting silver. Now, I am doing so for scraping purposes. I refuse to melt something that is a real work of art, and only want the ones without a lot of sculpting. This has led me to swap meets, Goodwill, Salvation Army, Restore, and anything in-between! It's more than a hobby. I think we have about two years before real inflation hits. I plan on building a good stockpile to leave for my son when I die. To heck with this life insurance stuff. That's paper, and who knows when that will need a bail-out! I like this way the best!

Nothing wrong with preparedness.
