Na_rtemis and I are friends, and we've been working on the process of dehydrating chicken for long-term food storage. We've got some video we shot this evening showing him prepping chicken and the end product after dehydration, and we're probably going to edit it and post it on YouTube to help other preppers. I'll post a link here in the Non-Metals forum after we post the video.

Bananas Bananas and more Bananas for the dehydrator. At $0.35/lb the price war is on and so is my hoarding. What a fantastic deal!

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities.

I'd like tips on dehydrating bananas, Jon. I've considered it but they're one of those high-sugar fruits that can be problematic in that they stick to prep trays. Any advice you could pass along?

EDIT: I just answered my own question:

Nickelless-

My dehydrator has some flexible non-stick screens that are placed on the trays. To prep the bananas I sliced them in 1/4- 1/8" slices then dipped them in a solution of "Fruit Fresh" which is ascorbic acid( vitamin c) and citric acid for approx 15 mins then onto the trays. Some people have used lemon juice for this process but I did not want any altered flavor.
Dehydrated for 10 hrs @ 350 degrees on the Nesco Garden Master. Have done a few batches and planning to do more around the clock for the next few days. Found some produce at the optimal ripening stage and loaded up. My daughter tried some dried product this morning and loved them so she took some to school for a snack- victory!

Have some pics that I'll post later incl pics of the dehydrated spinach from a while back.

Cheers,
Jon

Wow, it's been a while since there's been any action on this thread...

I've had a backlog of 11 cases of canned mackerel pile up the past month as I've been on the road a lot and haven't been home enough to catch up on my dehydration:

And also tonight I snagged the last 20 lbs. of frozen carrots at Walmart--I got a manual vegetable dicer a couple weeks ago and I'm going to start dicing and dehydrating carrots as well. Spinach seems to be a little pricier at the moment, so I'm going to switch gears and go for the cheaper-but-vitamin-packed veggies for now.

Seriously, Beauanderos, do you have that much chili and soup??

Don't get too impressed with the pile of canned mackerel--that's just what I haven't had a chance to dehydrate yet. I'm guesstimating that 11 12-can (15 oz.) cases of mackerel will only take up about 4 cases of quart-sized mason jars when I'm done, figuring I can fit three cans worth of dehydrated mackerel in a quart.

It's not prepping per se, but today I sold the rest of my Larry Bird college memorabilia to a local guy for $150. That's $150 more that I can use for my preps!

I went to the frozen foods section at Sam's Club earlier to see if somehow I'd missed restaurant-sized packages of frozen carrots (they didn't have them--so back to Walmart we go), but I did see 4-pound bags of frozen blueberries for less than $8 each--so I picked up four of them. Those will be going in the dehydrator when I get back home on Sunday. I also picked up another one-pound container of cayenne powder for my spice stash. I probably have about 10 pounds of cayenne so far.

I'm also placing an order for three 14-pound packages of banana chips from BulkFoods.com:
