Informative and funny!

I corresponded with the author a while back and shared a tip with him he did not know.

Unlocked car wash vacuums dustbins will always have coins and if you're lucky some jewelry.

I used to pick up alot of vacuum cleaners, and wondered if I could find anything good in the bag. Unfortunately, the first one I cut open smelled so bad that I lost my cookies in the yard. Kind of cured me of doing that.

Are you throwing that out?

The Phoenix area is plagued with empty never been occupied store fronts and industrial parks (thanks to the flood of funny money Federal Reserve Notes and helicopter Ben).

I just discovered that people are illegally dumping in the dumpster stalls behind the buildings. Problem is no trucks are coming to empty it out.

I just filled my pickup with sheet metal ductwork someone abandoned. Also found an old Hot Wheels car in good shape in a box of home goods.
Got the sheet metal in the side yard until I get more for a trip to the scrap yard.

I have found too that old clothes dryers will have coins in the chassis, particularly if it came from a home with kids.

been dumpster diving a few years ago with some university girls....but they were on the look out for FOOD....
they gave me my share of the spoils which i ended up throuwing out as soon as i left...

but on another note...i live in a rich area in sydneys eastern subsurbs and my little unit is almost entirely furnished by the street...and friend of friend old furniture...have picked up great solid wood furniture and many terracotta pots..

Another mans trash is another mans treasure..

So yesterday i sold a bunch of cans, some old gutters, and a car battery for $17.

Then i sold a Snowboard to play it again sports for $65. I found it in the trash.

Then I sold some tires and rims to the used tire place for $35.

I was walking down the street and a truck pulled up and this guy asked me if I knew of any old scrap washers / dryers, and that he was willing to pay me a finder's fee... I had no idea it would be worth the time to go collect these things... I may have to take up dumpster diving in my spare time!

I have looked in them and never failed to find change (unfortunately no jewelry), but now it seems they are all locked. Guess all the owners know what kind of a gold mine the vacuums can be now.

I've JUST started. Dropping off some paperwork INSIDE my building I found some lenghts of cut steel conduit, some scrap copper wire pieces and some aluminum caps. That was in a plastic trash can in the hallway...lol I'm all over this place tonight after the sun goes down. Found one prospective dumpster and dozens more around here.

With the current prices you might think about hanging onto it for a little while.

Tell me what you are thinking. Copper is a good price now correct? You think I should hold onto aluminum and steel? Would appreciate your input.

lots of people think copper will go much higher. If you can afford to hold onto to it for some time you might want to.

All metals are down right now, but if you have the space I would hold on to the copper and aluminum, but go ahead and dump the steel when you get a full load. Steel is too easy to come by and takes up a lot of room.

Got it and thanks for the info. At what price do you decide to do copper and aluminum? Do you go by what it is trading at or what the individual yard you scrap at offers?

I go by what the scrap yards are offering. I am saving my copper until they are paying 3.00 a pound again. I have a couple of hundred pounds saved up, so it will pay for me to sit on it.
