Hi,

I bought a rather large metal pot at a thrift store for $1.

My magnet does not stick to it. However, I cannot tell what kind of metal it is.

The marking on the bottom says:

Ruhtonjee Jehangir & Co Bombay Made in Austria

Ive googled it and looked on ebay.

It is silver in color but I know sometimes copper pots can have a silver appearance vs the regular copper color.

Possibly stainless steel.

Touch a grinder on it. If it sparks red, it's stainless.

I dont have one. Any other way? There is some green petina on the bottom which made me hope it was copper.

Actually some types of stainless spark red, others orange.

Maybe it's plated. File it to see if copper or brass shows through.

I guess I need to get the tools of the trade; I dont have a file either.

Besides a magnet what do you guys recommend that someone has when they are dealing with scrapping?

If it is silver plated copper, will the recycling places accept that as pure copper or would you have to get thesilver plating off?

Is there an easy way to get rid of the silver plating?

call your scrap yard. I am sure they will take it. See what the difference would be plated or not...

I don't know a way to get the plating off. Just call your scrap like hobo said, and see what they tell you.

How big is it?
Maybe it could be "modified" so you could use it to distill various compounds from fermented products?

There's profit if you melt things!!
