Hey I need some help. A tree fell on my Grandmas Nissan Sentra. It crushed the roof, so the car is totaled. I wanted to know if there was anything worth taking out of the car for scrap. I already took out gas, but I wanted to know if there was anything else worth taking out before it is towed away.

Thanks for the help.

You can get a couple bucks for the battery. If the seats and dash are still good you could re sell them. As with anything it depends on how much you would want to break it down. I am sure you could re sell the motor and other parts. You should be able to scrap the whole car and get the cash for scrap steel.

Grab that catylitic converter! This is prority #1, and beyond that, get the radiator and A/C condensor as well. You may also want to get the alternator and starter if you feel like it. Its alot of work, and the payout will be minimal for those though. What year Sentra is it? If it's newer then I'd yank the engine and tranny and resell it myself. Most sentra's I've dealt with (older models) had large foreign convertors. They are one of the upper range converters for platinum content.

Word of caution, being as low as a Sentra is, you'll probably have to jack the car up to get under it with a sawsall or whatever you have. I'm not trying to preach safety to ya, but just be careful man. Use jackstands and dont rely soley on the jack itself! Have fun!

I was going to suggest the converter also, but it looks like the other members beat me to it.
You might want to pull the wheels and tires. These sell well at flee markets or on Craigs list and are easy to remove. You might also consider door panels, mirrors, instument clusters, radio.. all depends on how much work you want to do. Rotors if it has disk brakes. Taillight and headlight assemblies. Do a search of completed auctions on eBay and see what is bringing decent money and actually selling. Be sure to look in the gap of the seats, the ashtray, and the center compartment for loose change.. some of those pennies might be copper.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Grandma's insurance company might frown on you taking parts off the car. That might lower grandma's settlement check. Better find out before you strip!
