Thanks

My guess is that they were stamped with differnt dies. You would think the dies wouldn't be that far off, but thats the only way I can explain it.

i was told the mint marks used to be applied freehand to the dies which made for slightly different positions.

i dont think theyre worth any premium.

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.

Yep, I believe thats it. This is also what makes older cents have the possiblity of RMP's "repounched mint marks". The mint marks were not part of the original die but applied afterwards.

Unfortunately the hap-hazard mint mark placement isn't considered a "variant" by any of the certification companies though. But it is neat to see. There are some dates where it is practically a 1/4 inch up and down on a few nickels I have.

True that the Mint Marks in the old days were hand stamped. This is why if you look closely on almost all older coins there is that variation in location. Some are really in odd locations though. Some are practically almost part of the date. Some have wandered as far as possible from the date. Notice too that many of them are tilted all differently. Always made me wonder what those Mint workers were having for lunch.

If I recall, the 1969 D cents are even more variable than these!! I showed that to a bank teller some years ago and she was fascinated!
