Ok, name 2 :) And this time one that isn't related to coin sorting!
But that is a great point Ardent.
Right now your government has chosen to put FREE BULLION into circulation.
You can choose to take it out if you like :) And one day they will stop and there will be a land rush.
Nickels with zero effort (but zero fun!) or Cents with a bit of effort and you have free bullion, ALL YOU CAN EAT!
NOTE: Do not tell my daughter about that "eat" part, she does like to stuff anything she can find in her mouth :) |

| Sure, you can make double your money investments - but they also often turn out to loose 1/2 or all your money investments. Real Estate can be good and usually goes up over the long run - but again Real Estate is a "hard" asset like metals. |

Coins that are also Bullion have 3 POSITIVE limits:
1. Face value.
2. Bullion value. I.e. cave men to space men need bullion. It is just valuable, period!
3. Possession. Any type of electronic investment - All stocks and bonds, has a severe problem if all heck breaks loose. They go away completely. Additionally, the Government has been known to seize electronic assets quite often (several banks last year as an example. nearly 100% loss to investors.) |

Not all bullion has a face value as not all bullion is government issued. However, in the case of brass pennies there is a face value associated with the brass bullion. |

| Right - the first statement is true for "coined bullion" made by a government in a currency still existing. |

I hear you. I gave it up and only keep copper pennies found in change now. I have a nice hoard saved up from hand sorting, just in case. Nothing too extreme but I can assure you I've handled more pennies than the average American would ever touch in a lifetime. Too much time, gasoline and effort to make this work unless you do mechanical sorting and even then you have to go all out.
Of course this is today, a snapshot in time. Who knows what the future will hold as our currency becomes worthless. I may be kicking myself down the road for not hoarding more but for now, I have enough. |

Every one should know when they have had enough in both drinking and penny hoarding. I disagree though that one has to do mechanical sorting "to make it work" or that you "have to go all the way". I really did enjoy my hand sorting last Winter with the company of my wife and dog. I even found an Indian head cent in my first box. IMO, just sort as much as you enjoy and can afford to keep over the long term. It's as simple as that. Once it becomes a chore then back off and go back to it if and when you feel like it.
I admire those members who are hoarding by the ton. But that's no reason someone can't hoard by the pound instead and enjoy doing so. |

Since we don't have a clue when the ban will occur. It may be wise to invest in a Commodity ETF, if you like the idea of PM's but don't want to spend time physically collecting the metals. Just a thought! ~JobIII
You realize that most people here WANT physical right? Very liquid and a lot of guys want them. Why melt them? They would be readily accepted, as they alread are, in trade.
Deal
Hi Deal,
All i meant by this was that if 89gt is not interested in penny sorting there are other options to remain close to the PM market. I am fully aware that most people on this site are hoarding, but i wasn't speaking to the masses in this particular case.

Name 1 please. And don't tell me, "this stock will likely rise" as it is not anywhere near guaranteed. I mean give me one where you have a 100% guarantee of NOT losing money and another 100% guarantee within a few years of doubling.
Name any investment EVER that is like that.
Hi Barry,
I think i need to explain this statement a little better. I would have liked to say most people would be able to earn more money right now working a part-time job over Cu hunting in pennies. This job as an investment would out perform the average hoarder for the next 5 years. As for investments that could be seen to double in the next 10 or so years. Given the current economic circumstances it isn't so hard to believe that most mutuals funds will double between now and 2019. Just look at Fanny Mae, BoA, and countless others. I would say an Index fund for those who don't like the risks of selecting your our stocks.
One index fund i've been watching since Jan 2009, has risen 29 points. That is about what i return selling my sorted pennies, less the time + costs associated with this hobby.
I usually like to hedge my financial bets, and the above comments are all just IMHO.

In addition to a part-time job, you could do what I see all over the inner city here. Get an old shopping cart or childrens wagon and walk the side streets with a set of wire cutters on trash night. Fill it to the brim with old copper wire cut from appliances, copper parts, plumbing fixtures, etc. Lots of free copper available and you'll get some exercise!

penny sorting is a long term play. there are folks who sort and sell immediately, but that is a lot of work for not too much juice imho.
but look at it differently. picture the U.S. 10 years from now. what will a penny buy? what will a dollar buy? you are lucky if you can buy a can of soda for a buck today. 10 years from now the penny, and probably the nickel and dime are history. dollar bills will likely be coins. All this could happen much sooner.
once they stop making pennies, the free bullion is gone. coppers will likely trade for a premium above melt like wheats do now.
this is not a get rich quick scheme. its mike a nice profit extremely slowly scheme. |
Buying: Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00 copper cents at 1.3X wheat pennies at 3X

Thanks for this. Very good and helpful. I'm too, just a 'little' sorter by hand ... but it is great relaxation and my wife enjoys sorting as well. its even fun to get out of the house once in awhile and stop at several banks picking up 5 or 10 bucks of pennies at each place. Small time stuff, I know, but fun for us

*Hoarding 3.11 grams at a time*
I do "mechanical sorting", but I don't "go all the way". The machines allow me to make the most of my limited sorting time. I still get my hands dirty after the machines do the initial sorts. I found a 1981-S Proof in my copper pile tonight!
The beauty of this hobby is you can do it whenever you want, play at whatever level you feel comfortable, and have this wonderful forum to share stories and experiences with like minded indiviuals who actually understand. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

| Last night I found two very old wheats (1914 & 1917). It astounds me that nearly 100 year old coins are still in circulation. Actually I highly doubt these coins are still in "circulation." Most likely the hard economic times is resulting in many people cashing in their long-held stashes of wheat cents that nearly everyone kept since they were kids. These older coins will therefore periodically surface in change, IMHO |
Hoard now and hold on!

For me sorting cents for the copper is fun, and even therapy. For $1 I can sort 100 of them. I get to work with coins, but not spend any big bucks.
Also for me this is my savings and retirement. I don't trust the stock market. I can see no reason to place cash in a 401k to be spent on stocks.
If the dollar continues to drop over the next 20 years as it has done for the past century I will be better of than simple inflation.
If TEOTWAWKI senario comes in I am sure people will be willing to take copper cents, "junk" silver for exchanges. The biggest problem the Colonial Americans had was no small change. The rich folks brought gold with them, but couldn't spend it because no one could make change. Copper cents would solve that problem next time around.
Gold is a good store of value, but just too valuable. Right now at $1000 and ounce how many trades to you make at the $1000 dollar each trade. |
Awake, O kings of the earth! Come ye, O, come ye, with your gold and your silver, to the help of my people, to the house of the daughters of Zion, to the help of the people of the God of this Land even Jesus Christ. |

Sorting cents and Holding copper cents is not a get rich quick plan. I doubt there is much money in it right now.
This is simply a way to get and hold what today is worth a cent until the day it is worth more.
I see a few people making some money, but I doubt if anyone, even here, is making a living off sorting and selling copper cents. |
Silver Monometalism is the most permanent and stable form of money the world has seen. Natural law and history prove silver value is best multiplied by gold and best divided by copper. It is only in this counterfeit currency time when the natural law appears suspended. |

There will be enough copper in circulation in ten years.
Sell now, sell later. And don't be foolish to over look the benefits of a 401k. if you invest $1000 into a 401k, your taxes will be reduced by about $1000. so you end up saving money, paying less taxes.
But you're all smart people.... |

I sort mainly to get the wheats, then save the copper. Why not save the copper? it is worth twice face value. Copper is only going to go up long term. over the next 4-6 years you will be glad you held them.
When I get burnt out on Penny's I sort Half's. I am only a hand sorter. I am making a sorting table now and will post it when I am done. |

| What's nice is that people sort by hand and by machine. We sort for a short term profit or for the long haul. For fun or relaxation. That whats makes this hobby great. We can start or stop anytime we what. |

| I am a hand sorter and love every bit of hoarding copper pennies. You make a profit, and you can have lots of fun. I wouldn't have near the fun I do now if I used a machine, no offense to the Ryedale machines. |

Dakota I'm not sure "we can stop any time" because between you and me I'm addicted.
I hand sort and the copper gives me a reason to tell the wife, but I would do it for the wheats and foreign coins. |
