If I lived near there I would stand outside and gladly accept all the unwanted cents.

Hey, that's on the way to work. Maybe I should stop in there and try to spend some pennies.

I will have to look into that local charity too, and see if I can help them out with some counting and conversion.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I wish they'd fire the moron who created and rework the intro song for Morning Cafe. Hate it when I oversleep and that stupid intro song comes on.

Please please please end the penny...and the nickel. Sooner the better.

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities.

I am not ready for that. Let the sleeping Dragon sleep a little longer. My hoard is not big enough yet.

If they end it, then our penny supply will dry up.

I've bought stuff there before. The owner is a Brit and a big lib. His advertising to the Berkeley campus argues that money spent on a local business helps out the local economy much more than shipping the profits to Office Depot corp HQ. So I'm not surprised to see him advocate something like this just to be contrarian. Maybe I'll stop by there and give a report for y'all.

Okay I went in there today and asked the store manager what the deal is. He said there's no big political motive; he just hates messing with them. He used to have a GAP/TAP but after several teenagers knocked it over when throwing their backpacks on the counter, he'd had enough. He figures he loses $50 a year but it's worth it for the hassle of handling them "they're always filthy" and counting them.

Funny to me is that he's unwittingly challenging a myth about Legal Tender laws. You have to receive FRN as payments for debts, but sales aren't considered debts. A business can choose any currency they want to handle their transactions...they just have to figure the tax properly.

edited 1:48pm...okay I just read the NPR article, and I didn't find out anything more than NPR already reported on. Oops!

What will really be funny is when his suppliers catch wind of this, they will round the (aggregate) cost of all items purchased for his store up to the nearest nickel.

Just my two cents!

I don't have a problem with it.

Now, if he starts to ban the use of coins not bearing the face of a war mongering tyrant, then I may change my mind.

Maybe he will take my pennies if I spend them as $25 bricks. Might be worth a try just for the fun of it.

I think you should Hoard!!

I put a gas station out of business once by spending $22 in wrapped pennies in payment for my gas.

2 weeks later they went out of business.

"May your percentages ever increase!"

Good thing he isn't in the gas station or restaurant business since then I'm pretty sure he would have to accept any legal tender you offer or just not get paid for the food/gas you just consumed.

Been there, done that. I think I got sixty-some odd dollars worth. Paid for in pennies. I kinda cheated though because I have a card that starts the pump for you before you pay. I simply pumped the gas, then took my pennies inside. Nicely rolled of course. Caused a few problems, but I crammed them down their throats a couple diferent times. It's been a while since I did it. Before the days of my loose return banks.

Deal

p.s. Somewhere there is a thread about zinc disposal that I posted more details about this in I think....

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Yeah.. Deal holds the record.. but he cheats. Out here in CA we always have to prepay for our gas. A bit more challenging when you have to convince them to take the pennies before you pump the gas. Gas is kind of expensive out here.. so I pay with 2 bricks. My record is $52 prepaid in pennies for gas at an Arco station.

Bought $29.50 in gas two weeks ago with pennies. Manager said she needed them. Went back last Wednesday and bought another $25.00 worth in pennies this time she hesitantly accepted them. She remembered me the minute I walked in and a big smile lit up on her face. Good way to dump zincs and support the local economy.

I didn't have any rolled pennies with me tonight.. so I bought gas with rolls of dimes. Not nearly as much fun! They didn't even blink. Maybe I can drop a brick of pennies on them Thursday.
