I just started penny hoarding last year.
I have not run across many error pennies. I did find a blank planchet coin.
I have found the occassional penny that has been defaced. Like a cross etched on the front or someone's birthdate etc.
The other day I found a penny where the reverse was totally normal but the obverse was not. It was pretty well worn totally smooth (including dates and words). You could see the outline of Lincolns head and there is an inprint of a circle on where lincolns face should be. Almost like someone took a hole puncher and punched a hole in that area.
I wasn't sure if this was an error or if it was a defaced coin. I can try to take a picture but usually my digital camera is lousy at showing high resolution. I guess I could take it to a coin store but figured if anyone could give advice on how to tell the difference between a defacement and an actual error I would appreciate it. Thanks

| I found a coin several months back that was fine on one site and blank on the other. I had people tell me it was a magic trick or not worth much. Regardless, I want to make sure, so I sent it off to be graded and it came back as a real certified error. One sold on eBay like the one I had for over $100. In my opinion, it would be well worth your effort to send it off to be graded if you think it is real. |

| I have seen a few old cents that were worn on only one side. They were used as a buffers to so one side of a belt. |

You said the reverse was completely normal.
Hmmmmmmm. Have you checked CONECA to see if they have any errors listed like this? I think some others have recommended some other sites like copper coins, etc. I know if you read through some other posts you will find some recommendations of other sites to look at regarding possible error coins.
Good Luck. |
