I found this article interesting. Maybe you will too. It is about the way the various mints operated in 1878... the first year that Morgan Dollars were minted.

Nice account of history and the pride of craftsmanship- thanks!

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities.

Is the process still much the same for the gold and silver eagles other than it being .999 bullion coins rather than circulation coins?

I am going to walk into the local coin dealer and ask for some gold and silver "cheese".

It says once the disks are punched they are considered a planchet, even before the any edge is applied.

I think today they aren’t considered planchets until they have an edge (reeded or plain).

Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

Thanks for posting this really fascinating article.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of it's victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busy-bodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis
