The following was posted on You must be logged in to see this link. I suppose it was only a matter of time before this happened.

Jim:
One of the easiest ways to quickly go through a roll of quarters, dimes, or halves, is to look at the coins edge on. If any do not have the copper color on the edge then it is probably silver. When you look at a clad coin, you'll notice a bit of copper on the edge. Then take a look at a silver coin and you'll see that it doesn't have the copper color on the edge. This is how I quickly go through rolls of coins.
Enjoy, - KJ

JWR Replies: Thanks for reminding SurvivalBlog readers--especially those of the younger generation--who might not be familiar with that indicator. OBTW, many readers might also not be familiar with the 40% silver half dollars that were minted between 1965 and 1970. These coins are often still found in circulation. It is worth the time to ask for rolls of 50 cent pieces at banks, particularly in small towns. You can also occasionally find "War Nickels" minted between 1942 and 1945--back when there was strategic shortage of nickel. So the US Mint substituted 35% silver!

Looks like competition is going to rampant.

Trolling is an art.

Oh this is just dandy. The slobs and hacks are going to move in and create nothing but problems. I just hope the main stream media doesn't pick up on this any time soon.

So what. I tell everyone i know and meet this fact, and the copper penny statistic. This blog looks like it may be about as popular as the WSJ so we are probably going to see a major shift in silver prices over the next couple weeks, along with a drop in % finds in rolls. It was only a matter of time before we all went back to the 401k with 80% match at our day jobs :)

I don't think there are a ton of people that read this blog and not know what silver is out there...

As we all know there is not huge profit in it in the majority of the country. Can you make a few bucks? Ya... Buy Americans overall are very lazy and most are not going to put in the effort to pick up silver at face value, the few that try will probably give up after they hit a couple of banks and find out that most banks don't keep these on hand...

On the local front, I rarely mention any of my silver finds anymore as most in my area will be searching from the same pot... I might as well give away money if I advertise what I find...

And I thought this was fairly common knowledge stuff. That'll teach me to give the general public so much credit. In fact, went to a small town dealer today (picked up a nice roll of halves for 10x cash) and he told me that the general public has no clue about the basics when they walk in to his coin shop.

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities.

This was fairly common knowledge 30 years ago when I started. I gave up after a couple of years, for which I will now never stop kicking myself.

Finally. I've mentioned this several times in the past.
Don't post pictures of your finds. In fact, don't brag period.
The end will come fast enough without spreading the word.

I'm not trying to single you out (honestly). Everybody needs to think before they post or talk.

This is a very small nitch market.

A little discretion will go a long way in making it a profitable one...

The sheer amounts of Nickels, quarters and dimes will confuse the public. Most folks (like me before this hobby) NEVER get more than $10 in coin at banks. To go from that to $25 pennies Boxes, $500 Dime boxes (I believe), and 6 rolls ($60!!!!) of halves is hard to grasp for these folks. Not to mention you return them to get that money back on your debt card.

At 1 90% dime a box and then taking this silver to the local scam dealer for 8x is too much work for J6P.

However they may use that info to go through Grandma's stash and stop coins that would have other wise been taken back to the bank.

Most people don't know. Most that know either don't care, or aren't willing to spend the time and effort necessary to actually sort. Frequent skunks will turn most new guys off.

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

I agree, Deal. A box or two of skunked quarters is enough to turn 99% of folks off. Maybe that last guy, the other 1% will have short arms and shallow pockets :-)

Most people give me the impression they just don't give a rip. It seems like they don't have the time or patience to get involved in what they would consider to be such a trivial and petty thing as saving copper cents and searching for circulated pre-65 silver coins. I believe those who invest their time and money doing this are a special breed of individuals with incredible foresight and awareness. Most people are clueless and will remain this way. Of course, over time the percentages will continue to drop because there are only a finite number of these things out there for the existing hoarders to hoard.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of it's victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busy-bodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

I've read the survivalblog for maybe 6 months now. I think most of them (survivalblog readers) already knew about silver and stored it.
