It was the other way around and she was ready for me. It was pickup day and I said I don't collect slabs. There was a gold 1859 $1 on the table that was slabbed AU55 that I turned down - asking $250. I said if you don't want the Morgans, I'll give you $20 apiece. No problem! Not being a Morgan guy, it was shocking to see how much they were worth on ebay. That 1899 is pretty special with the low mintage! |

| Did she say where she got them from? I can't imagine a customer was dumb enough to bring them in and try to deposit them, but you never know... |

Even the 1899 in MS-62 lists at about $300 or so. I think TXTim should buy the next round of drinks for everyone. |

My policy is don't ask, don't tell. I have no idea and was only concerned with the deal at hand, as always. She had them for quite a while and told my wife about them about a month ago. She brought them from home yesterday because she knew I'd be picking up an order of coins. I was under the impression that she just wanted me to tell her what they were worth. They probably weren't deposited or else the other tellers would have said something. She was peddling them openly and no one else was interested. |

That's if it is actually that grade. |

Yeah that goes without saying. Even in G-4 (which clearly it's not) it lists on numismedia as having a fair market value of $104. Even at EF, it lists at $201. Judging from the picture, it looks to be AU or better so whatever the grade, he got a great deal on it. |

Well, I could not, in good conscience, pay only $20 for those CC Morgan's knowing she did not know how much they were truly worth. I would have at least told her the range of their value. After telling her this information, if she had still been fine with letting them go for $20 per Morgan, then I could buy them from her with a clear conscience. I think that would have been the right thing to do.
But, you definitely got a great deal. No doubt about it. |
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of it's victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busy-bodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Very clear conscience here. She was thrilled and concerned that I may have not been happy with the deal. Like I said, I am not a Morgan or slab guy and 20X face was all I wanted to pay for a nice silver dollar - I can buy AU's for $15 all day at the dealer for a Morgan or Peace dollar. She was thrilled. I had NO idea what I had until I looked at ebay values.
She also told me she had gone to a dealer and was not happy with the offer.
Win - Win!
Both of us are guilty of being ignorant. I'm glad you weren't with me at the time. You probably would have trumped me by $5 with a clear conscience! and... I would have walked away not knowing any better, nor would I have cared.
Would you have a clear conscience if I offered them to you for $50 apiece? |
