Hi everyone,
Does anyone else get the feeling that this hobby is either going to make them near sighted, a hunch back?
I've been experimenting with raising the table i work on, but the accuracy and speed of the handsorting goes out the window the better my posture is.
I'm just worried my back or neck won't recover one of these late nights.

Hi Red,
Those items at Forlights look great. i'd love one of those when i'm looking for varieties. Currently i have a 3 inch lens that i hold in my hand and hold my arm at focal length while scanning a table of pennies all placed into rows.
I don't know how you do your coining Country. For me it's a little tough to actually stop mid-process. I'll try that tonight and see how it works out. I've got over 15 boxes to break into this week.
Thanks,
~ JobIII

As everyone else said, good lighting and a magnifying glass are a must. I have a 5 bulb light fixture above my dining room table where I sort. I swapped out the 40 watt incandescents for 100 watt fluorescents. Plenty o' light and stays relatively cool.

| I sit on a futon when I sort, and it does get uncomfortable. I find that frequent stops, two pillows behind my back and a cold, glass bottle of Coke really, really help. |

My neck always hurts after sorting just 800-1000.
But since I don't get boxes all that often I think I will get the Penny Miser. I'm not interested interested in shelling out a minimum $500 for a Ryedale. |

I can't believe you'd drink beer while coin sorting. I find it kills my concentration. TV also distracts the process. Don't you just end up listening to it? Save electricity throw on the head phones and pump your best mix tape i say.

| A good light source, but keep the reflectivity of the coins to a min. I have good size hands so I can hold about 1/2 a roll in one hand and peel them off one at a time (imagine an old school change dispenser). I sort on a piece of felt paper (black) to minimize glare. |

ryedale makes it easier. Since you're presorting between pre82s and post 82s, you can decide whether to simply sift the post 82s for older coinage that slipped through or to inspect them closer for the '83s & wide AMs.
for pre82s, choose whether to simply sort out wheats/indians or look for '69 - '72 DDOs.
By limiting the possibilities of what you're looking at, you can look at the coins much faster and sift through a lot more efficiently.
Since I merely sift the zincs for older coppers & sift the coppers for wheats for the most part (sometimes I look for errors), it results in much faster sorting and less strain. So yeah, I can have a beer or two while I sort as well :) |

Hi Buying,
I'm definitely all for reducing the time i'm spending sorting. I feel like all this chat is leading me towards a ryedale, but i'm finding it hard to sell the coppers I have so it's hard to invest in one...

Yeah, i'll have to read the reviews and hopefully see a video with it. But i'm still not that inclined to purchase a sorter when I can't move the pennies after i sort them...
Where are the people buying pennies go?

| Use one of those Ott Lites and take frequent breaks. I sort when listening to the radio or if I have a few spare minutes. I look at like an ultra-low cost hobby and an interesting one at that! |

either ebay or this forum. Not sure if pennybullion finished with his listings on ebay. But if he did, the prices should be back up. |

Yeah, it was hard to sell for high prices with Matt Walmarting us.. lol.
I remember those pains when hand sorting. Stretching and taking breaks helps. You can also get a nice LED lamp that you wear on your head and it puts the light right on the coin. A Ryedale really helps eliminate the pain of sorting, but you could get back pains lugging in the hundreds of pounds of pennies to feed it and then lugging out the hundreds of pounds of zinc.
One little toy that I got also makes looking at dates and varieties really easy without hunching over. It is a microscope that hooks up to your USB drive and puts a huge magnified image right on your computer screen.. really cool! |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Lately the prices have been pretty terribe on Ebay for copper sales. I look at them all day long, but the market price of Cu has climbed a little to 1.6+ not bad i say.
Hoard, i have the Carson digital microscope, but i'm not a fan of it. I usually set up 10 dollars of pennies all placed next to each other on a table in neat tight columns this scope didn't really help, and i don't like the res or lighting on it, even though they are LED i think.
