You mean they don't make medicine cabinets with the slot in them anymore - I need to get out more! My first house had one like that. It also had a chute from the bathroom to the laundry room so you didn't have to carry down the dirty laundy. As far as razor blades go check out greatrazors.com . The guy claims that by cryogenically tempering the steel the edges hold longer and you don't need to buy as many. I'm sure he's just using liquid nitrogen on them but never checked the science. I've been using them for a couple years now - they last forever and really aren't all that much more expensive.

I remember my grandfather pushing blades into a little slot in the wall after watching him shave. After my grandparents passed we sold the house, and now I wonder how many blades I would have found in the wall after 60 years of shaving!

I just use a disposable razor like the Quattro. But I am so cheap I never buy new blades, I just use the old ones forever. The trick is, these razor companies make the blades so close together, whenever we shave and it doesn't turn out good, or lot's of stubble left, or you get razor burn, so we buy more blades....Here is the secret, take you razor out to the yard and hose it off. The high pressure water squirting gets all the dead skin and stubble from being clogged in between the blades, it is though you have a new razor. I use my blades about 6mos or longer before I buy new ones. I shave daily.

---My house was built in 1955 and has the razor blade slot in the master bedroom medicine cabinet. I have been dropping the occasional pre 82 in when I am in the bathroom and have some change. I like to think maybe the past owners did the same, maybe dropped some silver to. Someday when someone opens the wall, it should be fun picking the pennies out from the blades. :-)

What do yards pay for stainless, roughly speaking. I realize it will differ based on quality and location, I just want a general idea.

And he that hath lyberte ought to kepe hit wel / For nothyng is better than lyberte / For lyberte shold not be wel sold for alle the gold and syluer of all the world.

I used to use a Mach 3, for years. If you must go out and buy these replacement blades, they are like $22.00 a pack of 6 or something ridiculous, I hardly ever buy them. I can't see ever spending that much or even when they used to be like $12.00 or so, I still thought "high-dollar". I switched to the Quattro just 1 year ago or so, because there was a deal, that made the Quattro razor and 2 replacement blades under $2.00, needless to say I bought the rest of the units. I still have yet to open any past the 1st unit, and I still only just now recently started using the 2nd blade of 3 total blades. Anyhwere around here the replacement blades packs of 6 for Quattro are about $10.00, I still like Mach 3 the best, but you can't beat the low price of the blades by Quattro.

This one time I was camping for an unintended several weeks, I started to re-use the blades that I had discarded. They wore old and some had the "massage strips, or "face conditioner strips" worn off. But do you really need that sxxt? We had a hose at the campsite. I don't even use shaving cream. Now I shave every single day, so I am never shaving off a beard, just your average 3:oo shadow, most often I don't use shaving cream, just water, sometimes no water, if I need anything I will use lotion, or soap or whatever is handy. I have had one beard over the past year ago, and shaved it off when I started the pack with the 1st blade.

Anyway--- get a hose and spray toward the razor from the back, and then the front, repeat as necessary until they look "brand new", easy as 1-2-3.

I'm achin' for some razorblade or loosly related razor blade stories.

I got 100 bucks worth of pennies in front of me (hand 'sort' job), and would like a good story to read.

I disagree with Frugi.

I've made every effort to cleanse my Sensors.

They just get plain dull! They rip the whiskers out, not cut them.

BTW What's scrap stainless goin for these days?

Yeah though, the cartridge razors pluck like Thogey said.

Thogey: I haven't been to a scrap yard lately. I'm not sure.

For the "thrifty " folks, here's one from the ultimate "cheepskate":

Aug 31, 2007 -- Drying your razor blades extends shelf life
In February 2006, a gentleman called the show and spoke about using the same razor for a year. He revealed that blades don't degrade from shaving, but rather they corrode from the moisture that collects on them once you're done shaving.

He went on to explain his ritual of using a blow dryer to dry his razor after use. His call prompted others to speak up and share their tricks and tips for maximizing a razor's life.

Clark got inspired by the whole discussion (and the expense of shaving blades!) and decided to take a single 17-cent razor and make it last for one year.

He didn't dry his razor with a hair dryer, but instead took the lazy man's approach of just blotting it dry on a towel. It lasted for a whole year and he was very pleased to not have to throw money away on blades anymore.

-----------------------------

The comments that follow the article are interesting too, be sure to read them. I liked this one:

My first project in engineering school was to study corrosion in razor blades, in 1969. Oxygen in air and salt from skin are main culprits. Easiest is to keep a small vial of oil, alcohol, or glycerin in bathroom and just keep razor there between shaves.

It had one of those old medicine cabinets in it that had a slot for disposal of old shaving razor blades. You pushed the razor blade into the slot and it went inside the wall. I never heard of this but I guess it was common as I asked my mother and she knew about it. Anyway, when I opened the wall up during remodeling, at least three feet of Wilkenson Sword razor blades were inside this wall. I'm not kidding you. I wish I had taken a photo as there had to be 100 pounds of razors blades inside the wall. I was disgusted and had to pick them up with welding gloves and box them up for the trash.

I lived in an old house in Pennsylvania that had the medicine cabinet slot.

Perhaps the only thing that may beat the razor blade thread is the tungsten filament inside incandescent light bulbs......

wow, this tread is great. I have learned quite alot readinging through the posts already. I'm still a bit hesistant to decided whether or not any of it revelant/useful information but none the less I feel more knowledgable. My parents bought a historic home ca. 1913 ans in it there were a few of these old medicine cabinets. I remember the walls were still plaster over wood boards but we never ripped any walls out during remodeling. Who knows, but this tread is awesome!!

Thought this would be the appropriate place to post this since it deals with using a razor.

A little over five months in and I think I'm going to get a new blade. It does extend the life significantly if you clean and dry the blade before you put in down.

Yes, the razor thread lives on!
