This thread is like a GIM reunion!

I'm concentrating on pennies for now, but I fully intend on stacking up some bricks of nickels once the penny thing starts to dry up. When the percentage of copper in circulation dips into the single digits, I don't see myself spending too much time sorting. That is when I will start to focus on nickels. But if they were to announce a composition change for nickels, that would get me building my nickel hoard with gusto. Fortunately for me, my lifestyle allows me to devote enough time to sort pennies. But I can totally see why others would be drawn to nickels if they didn't have the time.

Metal is metal. When paper currency collapses, you can't have enough metal on hand. Nickels, pennies? It won't matter once the dollar is in a downward spiral. You'll just be glad that you traded your FRNs for a real commodity.

So good luck to everybody in acquiring the metal of their choice!

I mainly sort pennies right now, however I've also built a modest stash of nickels little by little. Although I agree with your rationale, I'd like to add my two cents (or perhaps five cents?):

The U.S. nickel is the only real source of nickel among U.S. coins. Therefore stacking nickels can help with diversification.

Glad to see that more and more people are waking up as to what is going on... we really don't know what the future awaits so that getting ready for as much as can is the thing to do........"Be ready for all and you will be afraid of none"... Ponce

Honestly I think preparing for the unknown is kinda fun. I really hope there isn't an economic collapse, but you know what? I am getting ready 5 dollars at a time. I am doing a little everyday, I am a college student myself, I can see the fiscal irresponsibility(spelling) of our elected officials. They spend more money than drunken sailors.
I tell you what an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure...

nologiks? the "unknown" is no longer the unknown once you know that it will be so......I even know what will happen in my Micky Mouse of a one mule town......but even then I feel more lucky than those living in a big city where the fodd will be harder to get, here in the middle of nowhere we have vegetables, eggs, chicken, beef, milk and so on so that it wont be as bad as in the cities where hundred of people will be fighting over the las container of milk in the store.

When we gave away the Panama Canal and the Chinese moved right in I knew what was coming down the road........and now is here.

The hole thing was a plot to distroy the US and make us into a third world country in order to coquer us faster..........oh well.

Well JJM that's 80 actual bricks plus I don't know how many more in loose change that I have been saving for the last 33 years........I could put them in boxes infront of all my window in order to stop bullets........another use for coins that you cannot do with paper fiat.

Ponce, there's still plenty of time to get some sandbags together. After all, you might live through that firefight and have need for the nickels afterwards! But in all seriousness, if things go to hell in a handbasket as many anticipate, two things are probably sage advise.

1) OPSEC
2) Acreages rule

I know you've got #2 covered, I've read some of your posts. And while you certainly have more nickels than me, I've probably got you edged out on #1. ;-) Both have merit.

Lastly, as someone with firsthand experience stacking sandbags *prior* to the firefight, I don't recommend waiting 'til after the bad guys are shooting to start stacking stuff up. I once stood with a 1st-shirt in front of me and a platoon full of mainly pogues behind me - both of whom had a hard time graspsing this simple fact. That was before the shooting started however, they learned quickly after things got hot.

But I digress, anyone who preaches preparedness on the 'net is A-OK by me. And regardless of how many nickels you have stacked up, buying 50 boxes out of a bank at one time is AWESOME!!!!!! :-)

Hahahahaha thanks JJM but is only "AWESOME" because I am lucky to have the cash and not for any other reason.....talking about using coin to stop bullets it was only in jest, what I already have is a 2'X3'X1/2" plate right below all my main windows, five windows.....they have been in place for the past five years when steel was cheap.

My plan is also to have a wire fence 10 feet from my home and all the way around it, already have it at the back and at one side, as soon as I know that the time is here it will then go up on the other two sides plus a roll of crazy wire enrolled at the bottom.......inside of the 10 feet perimeter there will be some very nasty goodies for those who cared to invade my space, the name of the game is to delay them and not to stop them......besides, all the rest of my alarms lights and noise makers would go off first.

I have a trap door in one of my bedrooms so that I can get under my house where I also have some shooting ports and a 100 feet tunnel to take me away in case of need.......two places up in the hill with all that I might need for winter or summer to last me for two months till I get my home back.......to me is not what is going to happen but rather the adventure of what is going to happen.........heyyyyyyyyy what can I tell you, Ponce is Ponce.

Ponce:

You make some excellent points, however, you and everybody else on this site are forgetting the most important commodity to have access to if the world economy ever does collapse and anarchy prevails. And it's not silver, copper, guns and ammo. It's WATER. Talk to any scientist. The thing that will be causing future wars will not be oil, but WATER. Clean, drinking WATER. Have you prepared for that scenario?

Unlike most of you here, whenever I go to the bank and request a brick of nickels, they usually tell me they do not carry bricks ... but they would galdly give me 50 loose rolls. Rather than nothing, I usually take the loose rolls. Perhaps I should shop at city banks.

I would love 50 loose rolls!

That would be a great alternative.

I think that is better chance of getting Buffalos, Silver, etc

I agree that loose rolls have a greater possibility of a variety of nickels, but it creates interesting situations when one walks into a bank carrying a large box or suitcase that can hold considerable weight. Tellers around my neck of the woods tend to be quite nervous.

OK - I'm in!

I just put an order in for $200 worth of loose nickels. The lady at my institution said the bag already has $181 in it now and she'd call me when she gets to $200. I told my spouse this was coming - she just said "O.K."

So what am I in for? Besides about 40 lbs of nickels!!!! I thought about bringing a small suitcase with wheels to pick it up.

Thanks all!

I picked up another "brick" or box of nickels today. I'm noticing that the banks are holding a lower inventory of them than in the past. They are still willing to sell them to me but often they are out of them.

Ponce thanks for making the site inresting, but lets see here. You are 70 right?
why are you planning for the day after the day after tomorrow, I understand all the issues you speak of. Even the facts pertaining to my people running the world. Yes you are aware of the issues. If someone has a intense desire for a knowledge it doesnt take several decades to start to see the big picture. I am under the impression you live in a haze and a over abundance of knowledge has you at a dead end. At 70 maybe you should calm down about obsessing over your doomsday scenarios. Like you said your pretty set. So my suggestion is stop and smell the roses because no matter how smart you think you are, its really all just perspective.

they are the Khazar, European, Zionist, Israelis wana be Jews.

by the way Ponce i am one of those evil khazars so truth is i have been sent by the secret police to disrupt your though patterns.if you hide in the bunker i might not be able to triangulate your position. nevermind , we found you
