As copperhead said, the sorting percentages thread has gotten kind of long. Thanks to all of you. Let's start with sorting percentages II.

Yeah, I think the release of the new Mint regulations is a good end point to freeze the Sorting Percentages I thread. It's a whole new world. I wonder how long before we see banks refusing coin purchases now.

I was thinking along those lines too. I bought $200 dollars in nickels this week since the news broke. I may try for another $100 tomorrow. If they think they got us by the ba!!s with the melting ban they are wrong. Very wrong. Next will it will be a hoarding ban?

6 rolls of pennies from BB&T:

230 zincs (1982-2006)
77 coppers (1959-1982)
1 wheat (1946-D)
1 other (see below)
----------------------
77 / 309 = 24.9% copper

The 'other' coin above is a 1975 cent coated in some type of translucent yellow or gold-colored plastic (or maybe some kind of resin). The reverse is totally covered, but the observe has a 5mm-dia circular area where the copper is exposed. Let me know if you're interested in a photo of it.

BB&T was one of two banks I hit up today, and they treated me cordially. The other bank, First Horizon, was quite rude to me when I asked to buy rolls of coins. The teller brought the manager over and they both told me "we don't sell any amount of coins to non-members", without first asking if I had an account!

Running Total:
----------------------
681 zincs (1982-2006) 76.6%
203 coppers (1959-1982) 22.8%
4 wheats (1940-1950) 0.4%
1 dime (2004) 0.1%

Many of the banks around here will not sell coins, change bills, take coins in or just about anything else unless you have an account. If you try to bring in coins they will charge you a percent for counting them and giving you cash. Many Jewel Food Stores around here also have coin counting machines but they charge 7%.
I have opened accounts in 12 banks just to defeat this system. I can go to most of them and acquire just about anything I want in coins. I usually get a $50 bag of cents once every few months, look through them and take to a different bank.

I think the biggest hoarder now is the FED. I can say without a doubt they are sorting copper from zinc. Let me explain.

I went to Regions bank in Saint Louis, MO on 01-07-07 and got 20 rolls of FED rolled cents in the clear plastic rolls. Mind you I could see the condition of the coins and they were mostly dirty. At this particular bank they know me and let me choose my rolls by appearance. I always choose the ones that look mostly like copper and they usually are. But on 01-07-07 upon getting home and searching all 20 my counts were: 1000 Zincs; 0 copper. NOT ONE COPPER CENT!!!! WTF!!!!

Today I went to my bank (US Bank) and asked for customer rolled cents, the teller said he would give me all he had which wasn't much. I was able to get 8 customer rolled and 12 brinks paper rolled. After sorting the customer rolled I came out with the rather average low 20% average being copper, (the past 3 mos. of sorting I have always averaged at about 20% copper per roll, which is low but I just love sorting them anyway). I proceeded to open each of the brinks ones one by one and guess what-not a single copper penny! There was brown 1982's that looked like copper but where zinc, there was all different post 82's all dirty and copper looking but no copper! WTF!!!!!!!!!!!

1600 pennies:
0 copper
1600 zinc
2 different banks.

To me it sounds like when they outlawed melting they probably also started sorting with machines-we all know it's possible. It's a reality now. I think very, very soon it is going to be impossible to find copper in FED rolled pennies.

Good Luck!

Amazing story, Frugi. Either Ryedale has been busy in your area or some agency or big bank is sorting those.

I have a couple of boxes from Regions Bank I got here in Arkansas. But I haven't broken them open yet to sort. I'll have to do a quick check on a few rolls to see if they're doing the same over here.

Although we all knew that it was going to come to this i personally
thought ( hoped ) not this soon.
With the recent drop in copper prices maybe the wanna-be's
that are looking for a quick profit will ditch the
sorting effort.

Those who seek to get rich quick
soon find out
it is those selling the get rich quick ideas
are the only ones who get rich quick.

Speculators in the base metals commodities market move fast so not to get stuck when the prices go down.
Commodities still trade on margins, meaning you can buy a hundred thousand dollars of coppercontracts for, say, ten thousand dollars, when the price falls, those still holding the contracts have to sell off, losing most or all of the ten grand they invested, or more,
or hold the contract until it matures and have to pay the full balance owed and take posession of the metal.

Commodities were created to give manufacturers who needed raw materials a chance to buy at the best price, but speculators found a way to cash in on it, though even the best commodities speculators get burned from time to time.

I just got $50 in pennies from the bank.

Half was a bag of customer rolls, 25% copper

The other half was a TITAN (armored car company) box, 38% (!) copper.

I've used to think I was the only one that realized that. I've been telling people that for years. Those nuts on TV get rich selling ways to get rich, not doing it themselves.

Well, I decided to go get me another box of Canadian nickels and see if recent reports that the RCM is combing out pure coins and melting them is true.

I would have liked to go to TD bank and get a box of their CDI machine-wrapped nickels, but they screwed me over with some bizzare transaction fees that they refused to refund, so I now take my business elsewhere.

Specifically, I take it to the Bank of Montreal.

50 rolls, customer hand rolled.

Totals:
484 Older Elizabeth .999Ni
2 12-sided young elizabeth
28 Round Young Elizabeth
___
514/2000
=25.7%

+++++++++++++++++
Running totals:
Sorted: 113,720
Found: 28,129
Average: 24.74%
+++++++++++++++

Since this is my first box from this bank, I suppose it was inevitable that it would be higher than average, especially because these were counter rolls some of which were obviously a few years old. But, so far, so good. No obvious signs of the free nickel bonanza disappearing.

To update my previous post. I went several times to my bank (USBANK) since my lost post in this topic and bought more FED rolled plastic wrapped cents and found the normal 20% copper, so maybe that day a couple weeks ago was just a fluke or maybe something I just don't know. But one thing is for sure since the FED outlawed melting coins there has been alot more talk of hoarding, melting, etc. all over the internet whereas before when you typed in hoarding copper pennies into google not much came up about pennies (mostly medical related illnesses) came up and anything related to hoarding, now there is about 50,000 entries just on pennies and nickels- lots of enjoyable reading!

Yep. We're bearing witness to a change in mass consumer psychology. This is still just the first step.

1677 zincs
721 coppers
91 1982's
4 wheats(all from 1940's)
7 canadians

721/2500 = 28.8%

just curious - does anyone else save the s-mint memorials out seperately?? maybe not much of a collector coin but the mintages are lower and in $50 worth i only found 22 of them. i keep them seperate just in case. i dunno maybe they're nothing special.

heh. My rule is: do whatever best feeds your obsessive compulsive drive to buy, sort and hoard them. So yes, do that, if you enjoy it.

I had a three day weekend (Su,Mo,Tu) and I have just figured out that I must be completely insane. It seems I have not enough time to accomplish the priorities in my life but I have plenty of time to sit around and sort and count pennies. With my 72 hours of freedom I decided to go all out and break some records for sorting.

3 Days / 25000 pennies

On Friday Jan. 19th I bought one box of cents and set them in my closet for sorting later. On Saturday Jan. 20th I bought two more boxes in the morning to sort that day. I never got around to it, I was very busy at work. Around eleven a.m. I took my store's bank deposit to the bank, and the teller said she had gotten in 350 rolls of customer rolled cents in that day from an old man, and that I could have all that I wanted, so as crazy as I am and as broke as I am bought them all. I could'nt pass up customer rolls from an old man.

Here are my approximate counts:

17,997-zinc memorial (give or take a few)
6,940-copper memorial (give or take a few)
40-wheat back
8-Canadian pre96
2-Canadian post96
1-steel 1943 cent
1-indian head 1904
1-euro cent
3-roos. dimes
1-merc. dime
1-error/trick coin? (lincoln cent with 2 tails, no lincoln front)

That is it so I am about five pennies short, unless I counted wrong which I am NOT recounting them but thats o.k. since I got a few dimes in the mix and a silver mercury. Also sorting pennies for three days straight makes your hands and clothes very dirty and I got kind of a headache about noon on monday with about 150 rolls to go but I did it all in 3 days. Thats a record for me.

I am almost sorted out of my mind. I am going to take a couple week break from sorting and maybe pay some bills instead or spend some much needed time with my fiance (she hates pennies).

Nice haul, frugi. First time I've heard of someone finding a silver merc in penny rolls. And an indain head too- well done.

I know what you mean about being "sorted out". I once bought nine boxes of nickels in a single day and then spent a whole week sorting them. Good times.
